I think SRV used to run Marshalls and Fenders in parallel - several of each with a Dumble thrown in for good measure so the idea is not that new - for me its any two from Carr Slant 6v (I have 4 various ages and speaker configs),Two Rock CRS II, TR Jet Sig, Matchless Cobra or Clubman 35 mainly depending mainly on size/space available at gigs. Stero rigs can sound great but can also be a nightmare if there is not enough time to get them set up right or have to make major changes during a gig (trying to maintain a balance between the amps especially if they are multi channel) ;-)

It was an article I read in Guitar World years ago about how SRV would run a wall of various amps, none of them being identical, that sparked my curiosity about mixing different amps, speakers, cabs, ect.

yes you can certainly get some interesting sounds as the different amps/channels respond differently to the guitars volume/attack especially when some are running clean and others with various levels of drive, what I find is that the driven amps start to compress and the clean ones start to cut through as the guitar volume increases giving clarity that is often lost when amps are over driven ;-)
