Pulled the Trigger...

...ON SOME NOS TUBES!

I had my heart set on a NOS Tesla EL84 and a NOS Tesla E83CC (for added headroom and brightness), but the E83CCs were sold out on the day I wanted to order them so I waited and shopped around some more. I figured that I want to experience the whole thing of NOS tubes, so Ill go for some really good ones on my first time and take care of them (let the amp warm up for a lot longer than I have been :smack: ).

So I did some looking around and found this place: Brent Jessee recording. You had to call him up with your order (no add to cart thing) and I called him up and talked to him a little bit and my mom talked to him to make sure he was legit. Very nice, very knowledgeable, recomended me some other tubes that were similar to the ones I wound up getting but were much cheaper, but I decided to get the hyped ones cuz I had some cash to blow anyway. Got a RCA Blackplate 50s 12AX7 and an RCA Blackplate 50s EL84. I didnt get the brand perfect condition ones, I got the ones that said sligtly worn label, never used, may be labeled as a different company and may come in white boxes. I dont need the original boxes and the other label did not bother me. The price on them were very good and were as much as those other brands costed compared the the normally high price of the RCAs.

Got them today (they were expected to come in at the end of the week but I got them way earlier), packaged really tightly, everything looking good. They were labeled RCA anyway, which was good and the label was in almost perfect condition on the EL84, not as good on the 12AX7 but it was legible and good enough (you could tell it was labeled RCA). Im going to put them in over the weekend when I have some time. I gotta get my dad to help me cuz if I break them while putting them in, I need someone to put the blame on :fingersx: But hes the master technition anyway :laugh2:

The guy that sent me the tubes sent me instructions on how to put them in (he knew I was a youngster) and all about breaking them in and stuff like that. Detailed written thing about a page long, very helpful. Very nice, very satisfied with everything. I just gotta make sure that they dont crap out on me, but his guarantee should cover it if they are garbage (they almost never are messed up).

I dont want to look like an advertisement or look like Im spamming, so I wont put a link up, but you can always google Brent Jesse Recording if you are looking for some good tubes. I cant wait to put them in. The groove tubes 12AX7 I have in there really made my tone weak and thin compared to what it was. The RCAs should give it that extra fat tone with a great warmth to them.

Re: Pulled the Trigger...

Is your dad Eric Clapton? LOL

By the way, did you mention what amp you're putting them in? Those are some nice tubes. Be careful buying stuff like that though. There's a lot of scammers relabeling tubes out there......but at least you dealt with someone reputable, so it's likely you got the real thing.

You're gonna be a scary gearhead when you're in your 30's! mwahahahaha

Re: Pulled the Trigger...

Im putting them in my Gibson GA5 amp which was loaded with 2 JJs for a while, then the JJ ECC83 went out a few weeks ago so I replaced it with the only tube I had, a Groove Tubes 12AX7, which really made it sound better (because the ECC83 was going anyway) but still didnt sound as good as the JJ at all when that was new.

I'll bet this happens before Gunny47 reaches the ripe old age of 17 !!

Gunny47 You refer to yourself as a "youngster" (and I understand that) but man you know a lot about this stuff.

Enjoy the new tubes !!

I didnt go with the Teslas, I wound up with the RCA Blackplates, but I heard that the Teslas are very good too (more bright with more output). The RCAs I got are almost the opposite in tonal flavor (more warmer with lower headroom and sweeter yet fatter distortion content), but I kinda got OCD when every vintage Gibson amp I saw on the ole 'bay had RCAs in them. And of course, if I was going to drop the money, I was going to get the ones that made RCA famous, the 50s blackplates.

Ill definitely post what I think of them when I get a chance to put them in! Just been dealing with a lot of crap lately (a lot of tests) and the singer for my band recently quit because she got this scolarship towards a music college and had to get her grades up. We had all these gigs up (we sent this demo tape to a professional band that the drummer knew and we were going to warm up for them) for a long time, but now I dont know what we're going to do because she left. Her voice was amazing and it really bummed me out because I really liked her. So now we have nowhere to go for singing and its been stressful for the last couple of days when we were told this.
