Pulling tubes ohms question...

So in this Bugera 333 combo I got, it has two stock 8 ohm speakers wired in series for 16 ohms. I pulled out the two middle tubes because one was bad, and cut the ohm setting in half (8), as you are supposed to do. NOW...if I load the cabinet with two 16 ohm speakers wired in series with the same two tubes pulled, DO I set the ohms to 16 (because I'd have a 32 ohm load), or is this something that just can't be done? I know I can wire them in series/parallel and do 4 ohms, but I don't feel like running out and getting the extra wires and clips I would need to do that.

Read the manual. This should specify the maximum and minimum load that the output stage can drive without damage.

If your amplifier's selector offers nothing higher than 16ohms, your options are to run a single 16ohm loudspeaker or to combine a pair in parallel and select the 4ohm setting.

Surely, it would be simpler and cheaper to purchase new toobs than additional loudspeakers?

In normal situations I wouldn't be able to do it, but I got the bright idea that if I used the 32 ohm load that the 16 ohm setting would work, because of the two pulled tubes. Just wondering. I've got these two Splawn speakers that sound really good with the amp, but they're 16 ohms each. The manual probably wouldn't address this, and I didn't get it with the amp. Can probably download it but don't think it will help.

Pulling two tubes isn't in the manual, so it won't apply.

Basically by pulling the two outer tubes you're removing half the parallel load, thus doubling the expected impedance. Say you have a standard 4/8/16 ohm impedance selector, it actually becomes 8/16/32.

Or you could wire the two speakers in parallel and select 4 ohms (which is really 8 ohms). That way, if you ever put the other two tubes back in, the cabinet will still work for you and you'd just have to switch it back to the real 8 ohm setting.

Hey, I work in Passaic. I pulled the two middle tubes, which is the same as pulling the two outer I believe. So I'm good to do this then. Fantastic, thank you!

I'm sorry to hear that. LOL

I used to work in Garfield. Now I'm in Mountainside.

As long as they're the parallel pairs you're all good. No problemo.

Mountainside is a BIG improvement over Garfield, that's for sure. I work at the hospital, so its okay I guess. Maybe I'll see you in traffic sometime, lol.
