howdy folks. i've got a mohogany star body with a maple neck and floyd. right now i have a TB-5 in the bridge and a SH-2n. the custom is sounding a tad muddy to my taste in this particular setup and i would like some reccommendations.
thanks so much,

btw we play traditonal heavy metal (not NU-metal).

I would recommend trying the Screamin Demon if you're looking for a Duncan.
It sounds very good in maple/maple/maple guitars. I play in an old school metal band, as well. If you listen to the solos on this song, you will hear what the Demon sounds like, since I used that pickup for the solos on this song ... http://twilight-odyssey.com/music.html

Alternatively, a Bare Knuckle VHII will also sound very good.

Re: pup for Moh body w/ maple neck?

you think that will sound good in a mohagany body with a maple neck?

cause the moh body has more of an "airy" sound to it where a maple body would have a more focused sound to it.

so far i've been suggested the JB, TB-11, and the TB-5 that is in there now. and now the TB-12

i'm looking for something like queensryche Empire meets Firehouse meets Kill'Em All meets Peice of Mind.

Re: pup for Moh body w/ maple neck?

Well, the sound you're going for is varied b/c they all used a variety of pickups.
I still say go with a lowish-output 'bucker and add gain and attitude from your amp/OD pedal.

Re: pup for Moh body w/ maple neck?

any suggestions on that low output pup?

I'm currently switching over from a 15 year EMG 81 exclusive inventory of guitars. and trying to find what works for me in the passive world. so far i do like the sound of the custom, but i feel its not the optimal pup for these particular pieces of wood and the tone that i'm looking for.

thanks,

Re: pup for Moh body w/ maple neck?

That's really wierd that it would be muddy on a maple neck with a floyd. I've used the TB-5 and SH-5 Custom in an all-mahogany and rosewood SG and in my mahogany with maple/ebony neck thru PRS copy and the Custom slices and cuts through any amp. There is no way I could ever make that thing muddy, it's all about the highs and mids with just enough bass for some crunch and that's with 10's and 11's for strings.

Re: pup for Moh body w/ maple neck?

JB seems like perfect candidate for just about anything other than heavy metal- Definately an articulate pup and splits well to boot-

I'm also suprised that the custom was muddy, but there is no way you could ever accuse the JB of mud:)

Re: pup for Moh body w/ maple neck?

maybe "muddy" is not the correct term. it was still articulate. just something in the low end that didn't quite agree with me. i had a similar issue with the TB-14 on an alder/rosewood strat. maybe its something about the custom coil i don't like. cause i liked the TB-12 in that guitar.

so far i'm leaning towards a JB, TB-12, or TB-11? but i'm on the fence about this custom coil. i didn't like the scoopedness of the TB-14 on that superstrat.

Re: pup for Moh body w/ maple neck?

It sounds like you dislike the slight grit you can sometimes get with over wound high-output passives. I would suggest going to lower output passive humbuckers. I don't find lower or vintage output humbuckers to be weak or thin. I like lower output passive buckers, because of their superior warmth, clarity, and picking dynamics. Let the amp do the overdriving, but it depends on the guitar and the music style. Such would be the 59, Demon, Pearly Gates, Seths, APH....ect

If your used to actives, and their high output, then in the passive world, the Bill Lawrence L500 series would probably be much more to your liking. You can only get the real deals from billlawrence.com. Expect about a 1 1/2 month wait though.

Re: pup for Moh body w/ maple neck?

i've got a duncan distortion laying around here, i think i might just throw it in there and see how it sounds. if i don't like it i want to try a TB -11, TB-12, or JB. just don't know which order to try them in.

i like the customs big bold cut, but i don't like its steril low end. (at least in this guitar) i feel like i should play a dream theater song or something when i'm looking for more of RATT-invation of your privicy (JB -alder strat) / KILL'EM ALL type sound.(what was that a 500T in his gibson V)

like kill'em all with delay and reverb
anway, thats what i'm going for and since my star is closer to a gibson V (moh), i think i'll try the distortion.
