Pup option I'd pay for

An option i'd pay for? The hot option. On the vintage style SD's (buckers, and SC) if you could specify a hot option for another 15-20 dollars. This would be an overwound by approx. 40% pup. It would be ordered just like a floor shop custom. You'd have a slightly longer wait, but who cares?

Why would I want this? Then we can get our 10K buckers and SC's.

Benefits to SD

1.If it was done this way Duncan would have minimal R&D costs.

2.They wouldn't have to make more pups per se, just a new option

3.It would further prove they strive to provide the most diverse pup options.

Obviously this is IMO, FWIW etc.

What are you're thoughts?

Re: Pup option I'd pay for

A good idea, IMO, could add all sorts of crazy ideas to the mix, overwound seths, underwound dimebuckers, could get a bit crazy.

Re: Pup option I'd pay for

i dont know if 40% is what id choose pup i think maybe offering a 25% overwound option would be cool. a 8k pup ends up at about 10k.

some pups might not be able to be overwound, since the bobbins are full already

Re: Pup option I'd pay for

Hmm.... if the bobbins are full, maybe a thinner wire would work?

Just askin' ;)

A salient point -- past a certain number of turns with the regular #42 wire, you can't put any more wire on so you have to go to a thinner guage wire (#43), which is going to sound a little different.

Re: Pup option I'd pay for

Since they'd probably have a zillion kids putting in orders for every model they make, overwound, it might turn into a fiasco. Maybe.

I always thought the best idea would be to offer the Antiquity humbucker bridges in an overwound option, just like the Single coil Custom Ants.

I do like your idea, though, since one of my favorite pickups is a slightly overwound Custom 5.

Re: Pup option I'd pay for

Well honestly 40% came from me thinking about hot APS' around 10K. 25% would be fine. I also realize that it is only possible to put so much wire on a bobbin.

I'm just talking about a hot option. It doesn't HAVE to be any amount, I just dream of hotter A2 mag PAF style pups. Like the Wolfetones I think it is?

Re: Pup option I'd pay for

does the custom shop offer overwinding service for the antiquity p-90 or tele lead? any idea on how much they will cost?

Re: Pup option I'd pay for

The custom shop will wind you anything you want...... "If you can dream it, we can do it."

Re: Pup option I'd pay for

All I want is a hot Pearly Gates bridge model. If they would do this as a shop floor option, I know I'd buy at least 3 almost immediately. Ditto the APS-2's. :burnout:

Re: Pup option I'd pay for

Great idea on a slightly hotter Ant. humbucker.

The thing I wonder about is, don't you think SD has put a TON of time into different windings, mags, wire sizes, etc.? The offer what they do because it works. I'm sure one would actually have better luck calling the custom shop, describing what they are hearing in their head and rely on the years of R&D that have gone into this company...

Re: Pup option I'd pay for

I wholeheartedly agree Luke.

Right now my perfect Duncan pup does not exist and personally feel the custom shop prices (as well as aftermarket "boo-teek" pups) are not worth twice the cost of a "production" pup to me (IMO..of course I don't begrudge others who have no issue with the pricing).

A "hot seth" or hot "59" or an underwound Distortion (perfect would be same tonal characteristics with an a5 mag..not voiced like a JB) would be basically what I'm looking for. Right now it's basically feast or famine...vintage or supa-high gain. The few medium output pickups (C-5/CC) are just not suitable for my current guitars.

While there are some "odd" medium output models (signature models basically...Demon, Viv's Full shred, etc), based on my observation a good chunk of people here and elsewhere want vintage/classic vibe...with more output...not "modern" or "signature" tones. "Hot" versions of 59's, Seth's, A2P's, etc are what people want in the general sense. Look how many folks pick up a Custom cos they want a PAF sound w/ more output (and I much as I love the Custom it's not THAT much like a PAF, it's just the closest thing)

Re: Pup option I'd pay for

This would also be cool 'cuz you could have a coil tap to bring it back to before all those additional windings were on...think about some rhythm with your tapped "hot" model and then you untap it for that boost...
