pups for the music I make

I need some help in narrowing down what pups to try out in my wolfgang special. I dont want to do any routing on the guitar so I will have to modify the pups to fit. To get an idea of what kind of music I will be playing with them go here.

Listen to What for an idea of what I want to cover from the clean parts to the heavy bits. I was using a pod 2.0 on a marshall setting and a stock Steve Morse ernie ball guitar. The bridge pickup had a bit too many mids and was a bit harsh, I'm guessing it was due to the ceramic mag in it. I would like to get a more VH vibe with the open, articulate sound going when I'm recording. I have tried the custom 5 but it didnt quite do it for me. I tried it in a les paul and my carvin bolt with the same results. Pretty good but still not what I'm looking for. I don't want a high output pup since they dont do clean sounds all that well. Any suggestions on pups, wether to get trembucker or standard spacing, how to modify the pup to fit my guitar and if I need to special order short tabs or will they work in stock form would be great. I have tried out a tone zone/ air norton combo which wasnt bad but I'm getting tired of that wah type sound from the tone zone. I currently have paf pros in it but still its close to the same wah sound. on a side note I used the custom 5 on one song, Ripper's Comming, in a Dean ML 79 series. Not bad but the guitar had some bad setup problems that couldnt be fixed so its gone. On that guitar the upper mids to highs were good but the bottom seemd a bit mushy, at least with my equipment. Anyway any suggestions on pups or if anyone has something laying around they have allready modded and are not currently using in there wolfgang, mabye you would want to sell it.

Re: pups for the music I make

After reading through all the post's there seem to be 3 pups that fit the bill for what I'm looking for. The Screaming demon, custom custom, and the 59. I'm using a 52 on the low E string so I dont want a pup that will overdo the bass and get muddy, been having that problem with the tone zone I had in. So out of these 3 any advice on which one will fit better with my muzak? I'm guessing a alinco II for the neck to get somewhere close to the singing neck tone, for lack of a better example, slash got on the old gnr songs. I don't think the wolf special will have the problems people have mentioned with being to bright since it doesn,t have the maple cap on it. If there is another neck pup that will match up with one of the three I would be grateful for the advice. And one last note, is the jazz something like the humbucker from hell from dimarzio? I had that in my wolf too at one point, too weak and thin, didn't sing at all.... but then again thats what its supposed to do.

Re: pups for the music I make

I'd go with a Blues Trembucker in the bridge and an Alnico II Pro in the neck. I had that set in my Wolfgang for a while, and I really liked it. I only took it out because I'm putting that same set in a different guitar. The Custom Custom is nice, but it lacks bass and is pretty high in output. The Demon and '59 may be too bright in a Wolfgang, it depends a lot on what you consider to be bright. To make the pickups fit, you'll need to round off the square mounting tabs into an oval shape. The easiest way to do this is to use an electric drill with a grinding bit. You'll also need to enlarge the holes on the mounting tabs by a very small amount, and then use the stock Wolfgang pickup mounting screws.

No a Demon is not bright, it just because most are tuned into all that muffled bassy sound everyone uses today :laugh2: :fing25: :outahere: hehe
People sometimes forget to add that edge into the sound, clearness is great in sound.
If your amp is fat the clearness will just make your sound more interesting, sometimes a bit of ugly is what makes the difference, balance warmth with openness.
