Not to sound trite or glib, but I think you need to let your ears decide for themselves. Knowing that something's all-tube, solid-state, or a hybrid can bias your opinion before you even flip the standby switch.

I like Jonesey's idea of re-casing the chassis, so nobody would know that it's a hybrid modeler. I get tube tones out of the Valvetronix. Allow me to repeat myself: I get tube tones out of the Valvetronix.

I'm looking for something to practice with at bedroom levels. Does the AD120VTH still sound great even when it's turned down that far? I'm getting sick of using headphones, lol.

Farkus - Yep. It sounds good at low volumes. You lose a little bass and top end shimmer because the speakers aren't running at their designed output range, but the amp itself sounds really good at bedroom volumes.

No dude that's not true.
Every piece of gear has it's own character ,and if doesn't suit you ,than you pass on it.That does not mean that your ears are bad ,and maybe your guitar/finger/effects combo do not fit the amp.
Maybe you used it with the wrong box ,or with the wrong effects chain.Everything is possible.so don't feel weird!

I'm having some difficulty dialing in useful recto sounds. It just sounds messy and fizzy. My nephew was checking it out and saying "I want more gain" and I had the gain dimed on the recto setting. I thought to myself "If the recto setting isn't giving out the gain he wants, nothing will." What's the thickest recto-frying setting I can get outta this thing that still has some clarity? Anyone have any tips?

I didn't necessarily need the 120. I bought the AD60VTH head, so the variable wattage is 1, 15, 30, 60. It's the mono version and it's plenty loud. But it's probably easier to dial it down than the stereo 120. Plus, you're most likely using one cab anyway. And it's less expensive.

If GC is getting rid of them, I wonder what Vox product they're clearing them out for? I'd love to see a Valvtronix II, which is more advanced, and possibly better FX like a Vetta.

I'll bet you're playing the same volumes I am. The 15 watt setting isn't all that quiet really (it's a hair less than full bore volume). The 1 watt setting doesn't get the speakers up to speed really and the bass/treble side of the equation takes a small hit. I'm considering getting a stereo EQ to dial the highs and lows back in at lower volumes via the effects loops. That should serve as a nice bandaid to get the EQ sounding right at lower volumes.

I also wonder what's next. I hope Vox isn't abandoning the advanced side of the modelling market. I think they are seriously ahead of the game on that side of things (I would have bought it way back when at full price if I had only known what it can do). I wrote it off as just another modeler that probably feels and sounds like crap despite what ole GJ thinks about it. Sorry I didn't believe you. You know how it goes though. The one time I listen to someone it's some fool that doesn't know crap and he's spitting out buzzwords that all sound really good but aren't accurate or really helpful. Then I wind up with a smoking turd that I have to unload at a loss. Takes actual trial and error to see if what someone says is real sometimes. Gotta trust my own ears. I did listen to you though. I just can't trust the salesmen to actually know what a cab is loaded with or what ohms to set the amp for etc as they generally are idiots. Wanted a good shot at one of these with the right cabinet and I took a peek the very first chance I got. Glad I did it now. Glad I listened.
