Push button switch in Strat Volume position

I have my stratocaster set up with 1 vol, 1 tone and the normal volume position is empty because it gets in the way of my strumming. I think I just came up with a creative way to plug it. I've never seen this attempted before so I'd love to know what everyone thinks.

There is this button:

Which I learned comes standard with the Fender deluxe pickguard:

Here is a view from the other side of the guard:

Do you think I could mount that button through the volume knob hole? I like how it would both plug the hole and also give me a switch for the true single coil option in my STK-S9 bridge pickup. And the best part is that the button switch is so small and recessed there is no way I would bump into it while strumming.

Before I came up with this idea I was looking at kill switches. I love the design, but I don't want a kill switch. Do they make any switches in this style that work like a DPDT? Any other push switches that I should consider?

I don't see a reason why you should not be able to do that, sounds to me as it has to be possible, if the hole for the pot is wide enough for the switch button, you can do it without modifying anything I guess, if it's not wide enough you can simply widen it by drilling out the existing hole. Seems to me that it will give you what you want!! :fing2: I'd say go ahead and try it!!

Re: Push button switch in Strat Volume position

Looks smaller than the diameter of the volume pot hole.

If you are cutting the hole yourself it would work.

Yeah, problem is that the vol hole is going to be bigger than the switch. Might not affect my ability to mount it though. It might not look pretty, but perhaps prettier than an empty hole? Maybe I can found a creative way to fill the gap.

Re: Push button switch in Strat Volume position

I went ahead and order the switch just to check it out. Only $6.99 with free shipping. I'll post a pic when I try to mount.

Re: Push button switch in Strat Volume position

It's a cool switch option either way, I've considered ordering it in the past. Where did you get it from?

Re: Push button switch in Strat Volume position

I like those switches. They are similar to the ones on the Fender Elite Strats of the 80s, which were just on/off switches for each pickup.I will also say that the Fender S1 switch is an elegant, discreet switch, too. I use it to split both my Jazz & Custom 5 in my Music Man. It is really invisible, too.

Re: Push button switch in Strat Volume position

You could find a grommet to fit the hole. Problem may be that the OD will be too big and interfere with the switch. Or, it may be too tall. Most common are the black, rubber ones that are used to protect wires fed through metal. They come in all different sizes.

Re: Push button switch in Strat Volume position

Warmoth makes Strat pickguards with the volume knob out of the way. You can also get one with only two holes in it.

If you've gotta have a push button, get a Fender S-1 switch. You can wire it up as a volume knob and kill switch if you want. And it looks like it belongs on a Strat pickguard.

Yeah, I might end up going with a new guard eventually. That little switch is going to look like a nipple in that volume hole, lol.

Re: Push button switch in Strat Volume position

I got the switch today, almost a perfect fit for the volume hole, I'm going to go ahead and install it. I'm holding it up with a pic to show there is just a small sliver difference in the diameter.

Here is the button with pickguard loaded, i just taped it in place for now, lots of wiring to do before I properly install it

Re: Push button switch in Strat Volume position

The stock cavity was deep enough?
And how will you attach that mounting sleeve to the bottom of the pickguard- epoxy?

Re: Push button switch in Strat Volume position

Never did understand why they all keep stubbornly placing a knob there

PS clean and oil that fretboard and touch up that poor beater body a bit!!

Lol, the beater body was why I bought it. No worries about banging it around. I can't have nice things.

Then put electrical tape over the hole. And punch a new hole for the switch in whatever position is most ergonomic for YOU!!!!
