and it sounds terrible. I've got the AD60VTX. Maybe in the 1-12 combo the neodog is the better speaker? Everything sounds flubby and really has that wet blanket over the cab sound. I also have just a straight V30. Maybe I'll try that one as well. The Hellatones sound awesome in my 4x12 with my tube amps. I'm also going to play with the tubes when I get a few. Maybe that's the problem.

I'll play this speaker some more to see if it just needs to break in.

I'm still trying to figure out all the hype and hoopla over the V30, personally, I don't care too much for them, alot of lower mids that I just don't like to hear-and IMO they sound best when mixed with a G12H30,in a closed-back cab. In a open back cab- I agree, they sound terrible-

The V30s sound heavenly in my closed back Vox AD 2x12 cabinet....Maybe the 30s give up the tightness to quick?Those aren't the 60 watt V30s if they're 30 watt speakers?Those are G12H-30 clones I think?Different speakers! My 60 watt V30s smoked the Neo-Dogs....Has to be the cab...In my case the Neos were too bright,no mids,tight hi fi tones....

The 30 watt Avatar speaker we're talking about isn't the 60 watt Vintage 30 though? Right?

It's the 60 watt. This is also the closed back cabinet. I was using all four wattage settings on the amp and it sounded the same on all four. No biggie. I've got a regular V30 and some Eminence Legend V12's also that I'll try out. This is fun stuff for me. I would put in the G12H30 because I will be using this only on the 15 watt setting most of the time, but with my luck at some point my kids would flip the knob and I'd blow the speaker. I may do it anyway just to see what THAT sounds like and just make sure I always check the ohm selector.

Now the Vox distributor said I can use the 16 ohm speaker and switch the amp on 16 ohms like normal so I did use the 16 ohm speaker. I'm going to put it through my 4X12 this Friday and see what that sounds like as well (I will have to disconnect the internal speaker for that). Maybe it is just the cab or maybe this amp just likes 8 ohms. Gonna try some more stuff. I'll hit on something, LOL. At the moment, my opinion is that the neodog is the better speaker of the two for now. Wouldn't it be funny if once I change the tube both speakers sound great. That's coming too. I'm gonna wind up frying this amp and we'll all get a big laugh out of it, hee hee.

Could just be the way we have our amps setup,gear,etc....cause the V30s sound great and alot better than the Neo-"dogs" in my case....Maybe you need to dial some of the lows and or the mids out on some of your presets? Maybe the V30s just aren't going to work out for you with your gear? My Marshall 4x12 cab with V30s sounds great with my head also....:wink:

The V30's and G12H30's made my Crate sound like a classic vintage amp! I tried lowering the gain, bass, mids, presence, everything on the Vox. That particular speaker doesn't sounds good. I've got five others to try between V30s and G12H30s and Legends so that will keep my busy and happy. Just ordered a few different tubes to try as well. I'm sure some combination of everything and maybe even the neodog will work out well. A guy I work with is cracking up at me, calling me the "mad scientist". He's going to start doing the same stuff though with his Marshall AVT amp. I've created a monster, LOL.

Until I mess around with the tubes I can't determine if the harshness I heard was the speaker or not. Did you sense any harshness when you had just the dogs?

Wouldn't call it harsh,but bright yes! Never seemed like I could dial enough of the highs out and the mids were too scooped....The highs and lows overpowered the mids....Bad...We need mids and not just highs to cut in a band!

Mine is more harsh than high. Harsh mids. Supposedly the tube change will fix that. I wonder if your cabinet, the 2x12, has better construction and wood than the combo's cab. I may lug it down into my music room tonight (two flights, ungh) and put it through my cabs to see what gives. I KNOW those cabs sound incredible.

That's what my buddy is running right now with his AD120VTX. Stock Neo's in the combo and a V30 loaded Avatar 2x12 cab. Sounds pretty good to me as I didn't like the neo's at all by themselves. It sure adds an extra dimension to the tone.

The matching Vox AD 2x12 cab is baltic birch just like my Marshall AV 4x12 cab....The Vox cab was $449.Both sound great...I Pulled the Neo-Dog off of E Bay just to try it with the V30 to see how it sounds...The vox cab s pretty sturdy and stout overall and the construction seemed really good when I was inside of it recently..

I can't seem to find anything that verifies what kind of wood the cab in my amp is made of. The sides are wood but the rear panel is pressed wood or MDF(?).

Tried some more speaker combos tonight. First I put in a regular 16 ohm Vintage 30--no better than the Hellatone V30. Then I put in the 16 ohm G12H30 Hellatone--Incredible difference. The harshness went away, the highs and mids were great. This was very close to being the speaker made for this amp--as long as you didn't use over 30 watts. I had it set to 15. However, the bottom was flabby.

Then I disconnected the internal speaker and used the external speaker jack to go to my 4X12 cab. No sound. The internal speaker has to be in use for the external jack to work. Put the Neodog back in and man, the bottom was fine, the highs were too high. The mids sounded a little harsh. Man, if we could meld the G12H30 and the neodog it would be The One IMHO.

Next I set the amp back to 16 ohms and plugged it into my 8 ohm Hughes & Kettner cab with the G12H90 Celestions (Line 6 speakers). Figuring this is a modeling amp, they would sound great, right? Nope. Flat and dead. I guess this Vox really emulates a tube amp where the speakers are PART of the sound and not just reproducing what the amp puts out.

I am going to wait and see if the tubes make a difference and if not, I'll contact Dave at Avatar and see if he can recommend a speaker that takes the bottom from the neodog and the mids and highs from the G12H30.

I'm going to leave the neodog in the combo for now because even though it sounded the way it did to me. I want to try it with a 2x12 like jumpmarine talked about and I'll try two V30s, two G12H30s and a mix of both.

By the way, I played the Vetta for a little while since I haven't played it in about six months. That amp is just incredible. I see what people mean about the "feel" but I don't have a problem with that. The tone is just phenomenal on that amp to me. I'll tell ya, the Vox does the Vox and Fender amps great along with the boutique overdrive and the Line 6 does the Marshalls, Mesa amps and some other boutiques really well so these two amps together will save me what, about $70,000?

I told my wife I'm taking the dressers out of our room and putting the Vox amp and cab, the Crate stack and the Vetta stack in our room. I gotta go, she's packing my bags--no, she's tossing my stuff out the window. Did I go too far guys??????

That's cool....I Like the V30s alot,but I've been using V30s for alot of years cause my Marshall AV cab came loaded with em....My ears like the way the V30s fit into the context of our band's sound...The mids were pretty scooped out to me with the Neos and they are bright and tight speakers...I Like looser and smoother normally....Sold one on E Bay and the second one is on there now...
