Put Roughcast A2 in a 8.3k 59b...

I have three PRS SE Singlecuts. Inexpensive $350 guitars, but with a little fret work, some nut work, and a pickup swap, they become very nice professional guitars.

One has Seth Lovers without covers. Stock polished A2 magnets.

Two have 59’s. One new set and one hotter MJ wound set from the 80’s.

I put Polished A2 in the new 59 set, just like the Seth’s have. Been raving about that set for the last few days, and those two sets (Seth’s without covers and new 59’s without covers) now sound very similar, although the A2 59 set has a little more drive and a slightly more “raw” sound compared to the Seth’s.

For the 80’s 59 set, I went with Polished A2 for the neck but something different for the bridge: Roughcast A2.

Cool sound! Chunky. Funky. Chewy.

I especially like both pickups combined.

It’s a new sound for me. Solos still have the same drive and harmonics still leap out...but it’s a little less sizzling.

I really like this set!

You should try a concentric volume pot for the one where you dig the middle position. I bet the Jimmy Herring trick where you turn on both, and back the neck volume off just a bit would be killer.

This set with the Roughcast A2 bridge really reminds me of Jimmy Herring’s sound. He played in Nederland a lot when I lived there. Great player! To me, Jimmy gets a chewy sound.

My SE’s only have one volume and one tone.

If I did what you suggest, two volumes and one tone, I’d have wire the tone control to the output and that would automatically be like the 50’s Mod. I don’t know if I want that.

Replacing both volume and tone with concentric pots might be interesting tho! Make one SE like a Les Paul.

With only a volume control, I do miss not being able to blend pickups like I can with most Gibson’s.

Then, by all means, hook up two concentric pots. I had one of those Danelectro reissues setup that way, and it worked really well. The "bottom" control on the pot with the fatter knob was very conducive to pinky-grab volume swells.

I'm a big proponent of roughcast mags in the bridge slot. Seems like the uneven surfaces may produce a more complex magnetic field and a richer sound.

It’s a great sound. I’ll keep this set in this guitar for now.

The bridge pickup is not quite as lively and bright as with Polished A2 but there’s a broad, solid feeling to it that I like, and which my other two SE’s don’t have.

Harmonics are easier to get with Polished A2 but the Roughcast A2 has a nice chunky/chimey thing that I like.

It’s nice to have choices...which means more than one guitar!

I swapped out the stock A2 from an Antiquity for an RCA5 and after a couple of days, I think it might be a tad too much. Would an RCA4 be the next logical step, or is my thinking wrong?

Try an RCUOA5 first.
