QOTSA style tone attempt?

Re: QOTSA style tone attempt?

Looks like he has one fuzz pedal on his board and a number of OD pedals. So it seems the sound I'm hearing is his vintage Ampegs simply being pushed with overdrives added and a lowpass filter pedal and parametric eq thrown in.

I said not to forget soft clipped OD pedals but looking at his live pedal board doesn't reflect what you are hearing on a record...

I can also tell you this...simply pushing a vintage Ampeg with an overdrive will not get you those tones on it's own...

Yeah, he's got a lot going on there. Plus who knows what the second guitarist is doing/using and if that is what I'm hearing, or a combination of the two together. Plus I'm listening to studio recorded stuff so I'm just chasing my tail in the end.

Re: QOTSA style tone attempt?

Another staple in his rig has been a Boss OD for a long time now...OD-1 and SD-1 and in addition to the parametric EQ (which is a Maestro and very rare) he likes to dial in very skewed tones with a GE-7

Re: QOTSA style tone attempt?

"I'm Designer" sounds like a fuzz face to me.

in fact that whole album has kind of a germanium splatter sound to it.

so yeah, again. fuzz.

Re: QOTSA style tone attempt?

'River in the Road' doesn't seem to have much obvious fuzz in there, but there are so many guitar parts overlapping each other, it's difficult to tell for sure. 'Run, Pig, Run' has it though.

Re: QOTSA style tone attempt?

Thee is a LOT of layers in the guitars in those tracks but I still say the way to get the closest with only one guitar is going to be a fuzz in most cases.

Also that Parametric Josh uses has a very signature sound...but EQ'ing a fuzz sound will be your best bet.

Re: QOTSA style tone attempt?

you are definitely getting a "good enough qosta tone"!

next step is a different amp, as you know Homme only uses one type of amp really for all his recordings, the ampeg v4 or v22.

I sold my marshall jcm900, just does not have enough low end for a big wall of fuzz tone. Also, most his music uses a fuzz pedal, but I distinctly hear songs where there is no fuzz pedal on his newest album vulgeris as well as them crooked vultures.

Glad you are digging the good music! death metal is cool too, but glad you are not missing out on this awesomeness. QOtSA is my 3rd fav band after zepp and sabb, and maybe down :headbang:

Re: QOTSA style tone attempt?

The tones I enjoy of qotsa are the obvious Fulltone Ultimate Octave (solo from little sister) and with my Joyo I get kinda close both with the octave up on and off. As said above alot has to do with using an Ampeg there is alot of low end in his tone and the closest I have got is with a fuzz through the ampeg model in Guitar Rig (running it in 30 minute demo as I dont have the full version). That said I prefer the tone (and prodcution and the songs) off Lullabies to Paralyze compared to Eva Vulgaris.

Re: QOTSA style tone attempt?

So anyone have examples of themselves getting convincing Queens tone with their rigs? I only ask because some of the responses insinuate that it is rather simple to execute. Despite the perceptions of the gear I own, I've listened to the band since the came out, but have never heard a good amateur rendition. Just hack versions of the popular singles like no one knows, little sister and go with the flow.

Re: QOTSA style tone attempt?

First track in this video is Mexicola from the self titled.

I can get the heavy tones from the first few albums with my Big Muff clone. And honestly, those are the only tones I care about getting, because those tones are just crushing. If I can convince my band to do a cover of something like Mexicola or Born to Hula, I'll show you what I mean.

Re: QOTSA style tone attempt?

Also, here's a great example of what is clearly an octave fuzz. For those not in the know, Hendrix orignally made the octave fuzz famous on "Purple Haze" but it's quite a tricky beast to master. The octave is only readily apparent when you're playing on the neck pickup around the 12th fret. When you use it with the bridge pickup to play power chords lower on the neck, it gives you a pretty trashy, almost ring-modulated tone, as seen here:

Also, the reason I love fuzz ^^^

Re: QOTSA style tone attempt?

Damn I love QOTSA, but playing with those guitar tones just doesn't give me a hard on at all.

I only just saw this.

Dude, have you not listened to the first three albums? Born To Hula, Avon, You're So Vague, Regular John, Mexicola, Song for the Deaf, and so many more - they all give me massive boners.

Jeezus, boners everywhere

EDIT: I will admit that a huge part of their bone crushing heaviness is thanks to their incredible bass tone.

EDIT2: Kyuss is also amazing. Almost completely unrelated, but who gives a fudge?

IDK if Josh uses them now, but in the Kyuss days, a big part of his tone was playing through Ampeg bass cabs..

Re: QOTSA style tone attempt?

It seems only right I should share this here also

Re: QOTSA style tone attempt?

It needs to be mentioned that not all octave fuzz units are equal.

Jimi used an Octavia and Josh favors a Fulltone Ultimate Octave which is based on the old Foxx Tone Machine and they are quite different units really.

That sound Josh gets by using the bridge pickup and playing low on the neck (which he uses a lot BTW) can't be had on an Octavia or Octavia style unit...the Foxx Tone Machine (and it's clones) are the key to that sound.
