Is going the next step worth the extra $500 or so?
Quality difference between ESP Standard Series and LTD 1000 Series.

I would have if I could have, but I couldn't so I didn't. ($$ wise that was)
That being said I really do love my LTD EC1000VB. Having played it and a friend's ESP Eclipse VB back to back, I can honestly say that the ESP does sound and feel a little bit better, but not enough for me to wanna ditch my LTD for it or keep me up at night.
If it's worth it to you, spend the extra money, as it'll likely appreciate over time. If you can't or don't want to spend the extra $$, play the LTD 1000's guilt-free.

There is definately a difference... Even if it's not in feel, but construction... As far as I know, most ESP Eclipse models have 22 frets and a thicker body, while the LTD EC-1000 models have 24 frets and a slimmer body (excluding the T/CTM model). As for the other styles, the ESP's have little to no gaudy abalone..
Of course, many say the difference is in the feel, so you should really try both to see which you prefer..
As for the $500 increase, I wish it was like that for me... the lowest price difference for similar models that i've seen around me (3 and a half hour drive just to get to the ESP store in question) is $1000 at least... So for me, the LTD line is pretty much my only option, other than the new LTD Elite if their prices are decent.
But, to re-cap... Are they worth the price hike? Only one answer... Play them both and find out. B2D made some good points also.
