Question about fret wear

Re: Question about fret wear

I read these threads and all I can think is "please take it to someone who knows what they are doing"...

Re: Question about fret wear

I adjusted the truss appropriately when I lowered the string gauge. Trust me, i don't like the thought of replacing frets better than a truss adjustment, new skills or not. It played well at the store but I think it possibly could have slipped past me. This isn't the whole fret going out, it's only the highest two strings on that first fret. I do really appreciate your input. Truss and string gauge are always factors I'm on the look out for.

Here's a pic. You can see that the second frets edge is nice and defined but the first fret gradually tapers pretty level with the board.

Re: Question about fret wear

That's not fretwear. That's fret butchery.

And you say you lowered the strings. How did you decide how much to lower the bridge and what to do with the truss rod. And why didn't you mention any of this earlier?

Re: Question about fret wear

Yea. There are some good videos about fret work on YouTube. Watch Em and read all about it.

Re: Question about fret wear

No I actually lowered the string gauge, not the bridge. I adjusted the truss after installing nines on it as one would typically do when changing to a lighter or heavier gauge than a guitar is set up for.

Anyway, i took it to a professional. He said it appears that perhaps there was damage to the fret and the guy shaved it down for the sale. Offered to do the one fret for thirty bucks or a while refret for a hundred. Thanks for the advice and especially for helping me realize that I'm not qualified to work on frets myself. At least not without lots of practice first.

Re: Question about fret wear

I've been quoted 300 bucks for a stainless refret. Might be time to get a second job haha

Re: Question about fret wear

I was going to ask the refret guy how much it would be to compound the fretboard. But I couldn't speak due to my jaw laying on the floor

Re: Question about fret wear

Warmouth will hook you up too

Don't know if Carvin does compound radius
I plan to ask if I ever order one

Warmouth will

Re: Question about fret wear

I don't think carvin does. I'd kill for their new 7 string guitars. The guitar I need frets in is a set neck.

Re: Question about fret wear

$300 for a SS refret is an appropriate price for good work. A new neck with SS doesn't count.

Re: Question about fret wear

I really didn't like the SS frets I got on a Warmoth neck , razor sharp fret ends required a complete fret job to be right. Crown, level and both ends of every fret from now on I just start with the pro fret master instead of trying to find shortcuts or cheap ways around stuff. 300 bucks is a reasonable price

Re: Question about fret wear

I've read that warmoth just presses the frets in and puts the bevel on them and put the necks in the mail. I wish they would dress the frets. Its pretty inconvenient to buy a neck and then spend even more to get the frets dressed.

Dressing SS frets is expensive.

And IMHO it should be done after the wood had some time to settle after making the neck. Especially with SS frets that you won't want to level again anytime soon.

Re: Question about fret wear

Not only do I NOT want neck builders dressing my fret ends, I order them without a bevel. Fret ends are a personal thing, and what works for one guy may not for another.

$300 for a refret done correctly is about the going price, and the fretboard radius should have no bearing on the price.

Re: Question about fret wear

It just seems that a stainless refret shouldn't cost twice as much as nickel I guess.

I think you will find that a quality refret regardless of wire runs $200-$300+. Maple boards, new nut, and SS wire call affect the final cost as well.
