A customer just ordered a Jazz neck, JB bridge and APS-2 single coil for the middle. He wants to be able to split the humbuckers so the screw coils are left on when the coils are split.

He also wants hum-cancelling when the split humbuckers are combined with the middle single coil.

So should I send him a standard neck APS-2 or a RW/RP APS-2?

I never experiment with H/S/H guitars and don't own one with that configuraion.

I guess I should hold the polepieces of an APS-2 up to the screw polepieces of a Jazz and JB and see if they repel or attract? That'd be a start...

Also, would there be a better choice than the APS-2 for the middle single coil? He wants a real single coil...not a Little 59 or JB JR. or anything like that.

Thanks! Lew

Lew,

This is cool...I have not been able to help you yet! go with the RW/RP(I am not 100% sure about this, but Im pretty sure) and if you can get it in RW/RP go with a Twangbanger, if not the APS-2 will be ok. I used to have a Jackson that had 2 APS-2's and a JB...it worked fine as far as the output, the bucker is a bit louder but not so bad the the guitar is unusable! Another idea might be one of the overwound SSL pups like a HOT or mayb even a Quater Pounder, but like I said the APS 2 will be able to geep up pretty well.

Thanks! I figured out that I could do an experiment before I ship them and combine the APS-2 with the screw coil of a JB with alligator clips and and a guitar cord and see for myself which APS-2 is humcancelling with it. I'll post the results. Lew

The APS will be a fine match with the JB, especially when it's split. The SSL-1 might be a bit too skinny sounding in that scenario.

Tell him he's ugly, has poor taste for wanting the outer coils, give you the money, and go away ... :laugh2:

Tell him he doesn't want much does he, that's always a popular customer response ... (EMG thread) ... :laugh2:

Just take the money ... no pickups, after all he was the one bothering you ... :laugh2:

All jokes aside ... no for the outer coils, use a RW/RP single coil (stick with single as that's what he wants) ... regular SD wiring for the single... and wire the HB's as such (as it will simplify your life) ... red to hot, white to ground, and black & green together ... this connection you ground to split the HB.

Re: Question about H/S/H pickups in a Strat...

I'm not getting into the middle pup of choice, as there are people better at answering that than myself. However, something a bit hotter and a bit more midrange present generally will work well with a hotter humbucker, so the QP isn't a bad choice, although the hot maybe a bit glassier ... I might lean toward the hot as it might seem to balance better tonally when split with the JB (the jazz presents no problems at all) ... the hot just seems to have more glass than than the QP and more output than the SSL or APS, and still have that *single coily airy edge* when split. Ask about though, as again, I'm not really the one to ask on the best pup to use.
