Question about magnets

It's to my understanding that the magnets in Surders are aged right? How would it change my tone if I replaced the magnets in my Surfers with new alnico 5 magnets? Pr possibly even a different kind ofm agnet altogether.

I don't suppose it would be that easy to replace magnet rods on strat pickups.

I think your tone would change dramatically as it would go to total silence!:laugh2: In other words, you can't change polepieces on a single coil like the Surfer...you'll break the wire inside the pickup as the wire is wound directly around the six polepieces.

The Texas Hots are the same pickup as the Surfers but with alnico 2 polepieces. The tone has less glass to the treble, more mids and softer, slightly spongier bass.

Some modern Fender pickups are made from a single piece bobbin and you can actually pop the magnets in and out.

But most if not all of the Duncan single coils are made the old way, two separate flat pieces of forbon for the top and bottom that are held together by the 6 rod mags. If you try to change mags in one of those, you will get that, uh...subtle tone change Lew just mentioned.
