question about SG and SD pickups

Re: question about SG and SD pickups

Whats good magnets for a 57 set?

'57's come stock with A2's. The neck '57 needs treble, so that any mud goes away and things get clear. You can do this with an A5 or A3. The A5 will have more output and more low end than an A3.

For the bridge '57, I like an A4 or A8, as they preserve the mids, but add a little more treble (for bite & cut) and both have more output than an A2. Gives the bridge some punch. An A5 is also good, although it will add a lot of treble, maybe more than you want.

Re: question about SG and SD pickups

What blueman said was pretty much spot on, about the most common set's used for SG's. I recommend an Invader neck+bridge set, that's what I use in my Gibson SG Standard.. i'm using a Marshall JCM 800, and like my presence & treble very high, and the Invader is just perfectly hot enough for that guitar, with an EQ i'd die for ! However, in very high gains amps it probley would be muddy, and the extra output of the invader wouldnt be needed.... hope this helps

Re: question about SG and SD pickups

NOT a fan of the JB . . . probably my least fav Duncan unit.

I have a set of A2P's in my Gibbo SG, and can not be happier !
Saying that, i want a set of '59s (...or Phat Cats) in my next SG - for something slighly diff.

PM Wymore here, he's on the forum, and work it out. He's always helpful.

Re: question about SG and SD pickups

I did a bunch of searching last weekend on magnet swapping and I do intend to try the A8/490T - A5/490R combo as my first effort. I have the ones I took out of my Faded SG the day after I bought it.

Still, I think the set of '59s in my SG is just right. I'm not going to try to wax poetic about this or that frequency range. They simply sound just right for me in that guitar.

I have thought about a Custom 5 in the bridge because of all the "'59 and then some" talk.

I'm really pleased with the '490T A8/490R A5' pair. Much improved. If you're happy with the '59's why not keep them in there? They're my favorite PAF's, and seem to work well in a lot of guitars.

Perfectly good question for which I have no real answer. Why do we do a lot of this screwing around with our guitars?:eyecrazy:

Becuase we get ideas from guys on this forum, that we wound have never thought of on our own. We just have to buy more guitars & PU's to try them out.

i had to set up paypal, ill see how it goes :scratchch

Re: question about SG and SD pickups

you know, you probably could have hooked up the deal with the magnets by paypalling/sending a money order to somebody in the US willing to relay the order from wymore to you. just sayin';)

Re: question about SG and SD pickups

oh well so complicated! and its 2009 :scratchch

btw i installed a while ago gibson PU covers to neck & bridge, after i change magnets should i keep em or take them off?

Re: question about SG and SD pickups

-obligatory "go with your ears" comment about the pickup covers and magnets-

for the most part, covers don't mess with the tone unless you change the adjustable coil's screws to match the height of the cover. if you do that, you get a bit more trebly stringyness(clarity) happening. what magnets did you get?

Re: question about SG and SD pickups

well i ordered a5 for neck and a8 for bridge as someone suggested :scratchch

Re: question about SG and SD pickups

I put a set of Seymour Duncan Antiquities in an upgraded 80's lefty 61' Greco SG model to astounding results, talk about your Angus Young tone with the proper amount of cut. It's all there in spades, especially the 3 dimensional Marshall thing going on through my Mouradian Custom JTM 45/50 head through a 4x12 Vintage 30 slant front Marshall cab. My Mouradian Custom JTM 45/50 head has a Heyboer JTM 45 PT, a MM JTM 50 OT, MM choke, a T.A.D. STR GZ34 tube rectifier, 2 x GT KT66 HP NOS tubes, and 3 x GT 12AX7 Mullard NOS tubes. The Mouradian Custom JTM 45/50 amp will accept 6L6 types, 6V6 types, and EL34 types, a truly "benchmark" sounding Marshall style head.
