Thanks for that! -I never knew he was the guy who built my Tube Works Real Tube pedal. Great story about him voicing it by playing 'Tush' through his Rhodes until he got it right. I also had no idea Billy G swore by them. Unfortunately mine was stolen in '02, and I haven't seen one since. It had horrible detente pots, though, and they got incredibly scratchy and intermittent. So whoever eventually got it probably thinks the pedal doesn't work...

Man that is sweet, but $300 bucks + $12 for shipping? I don't know about that; it might be cheaper or at least the same price to find and old one, or just go with another tube od.

Again the world of vintage/custom pedals make me :argh:

Re: Question about tube overdrives

AFAIK, the Butler Tube Driver also runs the tube at low voltage and uses ICs for most of the gain.

check out the Damage Control Womanizer

I tried one at a local guitar shop plugged straight into a little Behringer mixer and Truth monitors and it sounded shweeeet. with the optical compressor and pre sweep I got some very cool in-between crunch and lead tones. $300 is a little out of my comfort zone for a pedal, tho :eek13:

Re: Question about tube overdrives

The Mesa Boogie Bottle Rocket is a very good pedal...very dependant on the tubes you use & it can sound like anything you want.

Want for gain...use a Shuguang 9th
Want smoother...use a JJ

The stock Mesa tubes are crap & the controls are very sensitive, but once you get it dialed it, it's a sweet sweet OD :bigok:

OR the Twin Tube Classic will get ya' going real fast !!! :D

Re: Question about tube overdrives

Wasn't there just a thread about this a few days ago?

I had a Chandler Tube Driver (which I got used for like $30) in front of my NMV Marshall. I hated it. Shrill, overly bright, didn't sound like an overdrive, just a distortion pedal with a lot of high end on it.

This pedal was primarily responsible for getting me a "tone intervention" from my band. My sound was so ice-picky and so ****ty my band sat me down and said "your tone sucks."

At the time I was running a Les Paul, a Telecaster Custom and a '64 Jaguar (I may have had a 50s LP Jr at that point)- into my NMV 100w Marshall and matching 4x12- and it was heinous.

I'd seriously save some money and find an OD pedal that works for you, rather than paying for the gimmick of having a tube in it. Although no pedal is give you the sound, feel and response of an amp doing what it does- there are pedals that get you in the neighborhood- find one that has dynamics- it responds to your attack.

I harp about it all the time, but for just over $100 you can score yourself a Barber Direct Drive- I really like mine, I guess the new ones have more bottom end and have the LED in a better spot- my two complaints about the pedal.
