Question about wiring on a 5-way switch

So this is the way the 5-way switch came wired on my Pawn Shop Bass VI. Has anyone ever seen a switch wired like this? And why does it have a ground, which is not something I've seen before? Oh, and there isn't anything wired to the bridge post, because I was in the middle of a pickup swap.

That "ground" wire must have been an afterthought to some other wiring scheme. As it sits now, it does nothing since the other three terminals associated with it aren't connected to anything.

In its current position, the black grounding wire only makes sense as a (potential) automatic coil split for when the switch is in the "neck" position. A second wire would be required for this.

The same wire, soldered somewhere on the selector switch chassis, would serve as a ground connection for the switch itself and the rectangle of screening foil.
