Question for Glassman and all the other amp gurus

Re: Question for Glassman and all the other amp gurus

Depends on the bias range of your amp. That article implies the HRDlx will sweep into 6V6 territory.
Then it is a question of plate voltage, which is usually quite a bit higher for a 6L6.
Then there is the question of reflected impedance of the OT. Optimum will be much higher for a pair of 6V6.
But people probably do it all the time with success. But you would not build a 2x6V6 amp that way.
Are you looking for a reduction in volume.? If so, there is probably not going to be much.
If you have a pair of 6V6, I would not hesitate to give it a try.
A Lot of guys use JJ in your situation. Though that almost puts you back to square one. The JJ borders on a small 6L6 anyway.
Try it and see. It might be just what you have in mind. If not, easy to go back.;)
good luck

Re: Question for Glassman and all the other amp gurus

i would think youd be fine with jj 6v6's but im not sure something like a tung sol will handle the plate voltage.

Re: Question for Glassman and all the other amp gurus

JJ 6V6s will work fine and there is sufficient adjustment in that amp to get the bias within range for those tubes; I'd shoot for 16 to 20 mA per tube.

If your goal is to get a creamy tone at a lower volume then I'd suggest also using a 12AU7 in V3; this will lower the level driving the power tubes and make your preamp setting seem a lot like they were with 6L6s. It will also beef up the bass a bit at lower volumes.

If your goal is to get a dirtier tone by driving the amp hard, keep the bias setting conservative (no higher than 18mA) so you don't over dissipate those 6V6s.

Re: Question for Glassman and all the other amp gurus

Your impedance is now off too. Not sure that will matter to the amp but might to your ears. Old Fenders would run an 8 ohm speaker but allow an extra speaker out. You get an impedance mismatch but the OT's handled it well.

Re: Question for Glassman and all the other amp gurus

Thanks for the responses guys! I recently put a Cannabis Rex speaker in my amp and it has benefited tonewise...but at an increase in volume.

I am hoping that some 6v6s will bring down the volume a bit and maybe lower the bass response slightly....I had to run the amp with the bass at almost 0 the other night and would like some room for adjustment.
