Alright guys, I'm wondering how much it should cost around to have a Floyd installed on an axe with a TOM bridge?

I can't find an axe with a Floyd in spec's I'm happy with for a reasonable price, so I'm looking into this.

Re: Question for Luthiers - Cost of Floyd Installation?

Consider this a bump as I'm considering the same thing since I can't find a C-1 Floyd Rose ANYWHERE............

Re: Question for Luthiers - Cost of Floyd Installation?

aye, I'll 3rd this..thought has crossed my mind a few times

OK, you cant find a guitar with a Floyd you like for a "reasonable price". By the time you bought a floyd unit and paid for the installation/setup, and guitar you would be paying the same price or more for a Floyd axe!

Well, the only axes with a Floyd I'd be into are 1500+ Ibanez J Custom 7's.

A Hellraiser would cost 700 brand new, plus 170 for a Floyd, and then labor. I don't think the labor would cost 600+ dollars ;).

I need:

7 strings
Mahogany body
Floyd or Edge trem
HH, HSH, or HS setup
At least 25.5 scale at bare minimum

Shipping would probally be an easy $50-$100 also! In addition, modded guitars tend to loose resale value alot of the time also.

Seriously, the ony floyd axe you like is $1500??? How about picking up a used one?

I could care less about resale with this one, actually.

The biggest factor is the 7 string thing. That knocks off 99% of the guitars out there.

Maybe a custom Carvin, and add the OG Floyd?

I hate Carvins body style, the stock Floyd is crap, and I'd prefer a longer scale :(.

Re: Question for Luthiers - Cost of Floyd Installation?

Hate to hijack but a few Aussie music stores carry the C-1 Fr. I too was extremely interested 'till I discovered they're nowhere to be found.

You could buy a used RG seven*, order an aftermarket mahogany body, and switch the neck and hardware over.

* [Not a plug! :nervous: ]

Re: Question for Luthiers - Cost of Floyd Installation?

Haha that I could... How much would one of those RG 7's run me*, do you think?

* [Not an offer! ;)]

But admittedly would have a quality guitar with a decent Floyd instead of a POS with a POS Floyd to boot ;)

:laugh2: Touche!

I had the same problem/solution cross my mind before I found my Jackson. I finally bit the bullet and bought the Jackson. I just couldn't justify paying up to $1000 for an axe and having to turn around and spend money on it.

I can understand the problem a 7-string would present, though. That's probably an avenue I'd look at.

I can't remember their 7-string offerings off-hand. Does Warmoth have anything that would suit you? I figure you've already considered that, though.

Re: Question for Luthiers - Cost of Floyd Installation?

Unfortunately, Warmoth doesn't know how to make a decent 7 string. They offer a 25" scale and a 28.5" scale... way too short and way too long, respectively.

Re: Question for Luthiers - Cost of Floyd Installation?

Ahh, yes. I think I'd want something somewhere in the middle of that, too.

Re: Question for Luthiers - Cost of Floyd Installation?

I'd route and install it for around $100-$150, but you should first make sure that the Floyd would cover the string-through holes. It would be more if I had to fill one or two of those holes in the top. I'm not necessarily offering to do it, I'm just trying to provide a good benchmark. The arched top means the luthier has to have an overhead router or blow time making a jig. Then, since it doesn't already have a small trem, the whole route needs to be done, front and back, from scratch. It would be less if there was already a stratty trem in there or something.

I have a Blackjack, and I've debated routing it, simply because I also have a 7-string Lo-Pro Edge lying around. But I'd only be doing it BECAUSE I had both, not because I really want it that way. So I'm going to use the trem on something else.

You're right, there's no real good alternative to the Schecter long scale 7's. And they're not that expensive, so modding it isn't a terrible idea. If it's done right it could even enhance your resale. If done poorly it will devastate it.

Re: Question for Luthiers - Cost of Floyd Installation?

Does the C-7 have an angled neck pocket like a Gibson, or is the fretboard more or less parallel to the face of the body? Would a recessed FR work, or would it have to be jacked up some?
