Question for the painters.

How do they achieve this satin, (sateen), or matte finish? Is this something an amateur could do? I love this look.

The color is not that difficult, and the "gloss" level isn't that difficult either. You can buy matte topcoat in various levels of matte. I don't know where you could buy transparant topcoat in a can where you are, but where I am, any decent car detailing shop has 1K spraypaint in various grades of gloss to matte, so you can choose.

I've got various compressors and an airbrush. I don't have a full size air paint gun. But I don't think they're super expensive.

Harbor Freight has a few nice spray guns. I have a purple one (can't remember the model but the color should help). It's nice and works well. Of course, technique is important too and keeping it clean and the pin lubed (a thin coat of Vaseline works well).

Matte finishes are achieved by adding a flattener in the top coats. The finish needs to be agitated or stirred during spraying. I used to ask my wholesaler to add the flattener for me, but he told me for small batches in a pinch I could add a little corn starch or pure talcum powder to the mix. One rule when spraying ANY flattener - clean the gun out very well afterward to prevent contamination in the next spray job, or use a dedicated spray gun used just for flattened finishes.

Made a lot of money with this Miller airbrush I've owned since the late 70's. The cup holds enough to spray 2 thin coats on most guitars.

Cool. I'll dig mine out, and start practicing.

What PSI do you use? I can probably find some YT How-to's.
