Both use a ceramic magnet.

The Distortion is a JB with a ceramic magnet.

The Custom is a Custom Custom/Custom 5 with a ceramic magnet.

The Custom is 14.4K.

The Distortion is 16.6K.

Here's the questions:

Is the wire gauge the same in both?

What is the gauge? 43 or 44?

Re: Questions about Distortion vs. Custom

I may be mistaken, but I believe the Custom is 43. Don't know about the JB/DD/Invader.

Re: Questions about Distortion vs. Custom

From what I've read in BachToRock's post on the Custom/59 hybrid, the Custom series are all wound with 43 gauge wire to around 14k, that wire's ideal range. And the JB/DD are wound with 44 gauge wire to 16k, the ideal range for that wire.

Re: Questions about Distortion vs. Custom

The Custom(s) are wound with 43 guage wire the JB/Distortion and Invader use 44 guage wire, both the Custom and the Distortion do have ceramic magnets, HOWEVER the magnet from a Distortion is a good bit larger that the magnet in a Custom.

Re: Questions about Distortion vs. Custom

What's the major difference by using a smaller ceramic mag? String pull? Would using an alnico 8 give the same result?

Re: Questions about Distortion vs. Custom

String pull is really not much of an issue with buckers as the magnet is under an entire pickup. The larger ceramic magnet is stronger and does give a bit "more" to the tone...as for all the Alnico 8 stuff I have not ever tried an alnico 8 pickup but to be honest I have a feeling that if they were really that good they would be used on more pickups...

Re: Questions about Distortion vs. Custom

Alnico 8 is actually the best mag as it unifies the best qualities of
ceramic for power without harsh highs
alnico 5 for punch and clarity
alnico 2 for good broad midrange
but guitarist like a lot of people are sheeps and until there is not a famous player that use it they will ignore it .
Though the Custom and JB would probably sound the best with it ( but watch the bass on the Custom it is sometime muddy )
For what I know the Demon 8 is the ultimate pickup .
