Questions Regarding the JB!

I have decided to have the JB in bridge and a 59 in the neck postion of my strat. I like rock, metal and blues. I have some questions regarding the JB:

1. What will 500k pots do to the JB?
2. Will the JB sound more heavier when using 500k pots?
3. Can I do clean stuff with the JB even if I use 500k pots?

1. 500K pots will retain more highs than 250K wjich will allow some highs to bleed to ground even when the pot is on 10.

2. Heavier? No...I don't think so.

3. Sure...no problem. Especially if you install a push/pull pot to split the JB for a killer single coil tone. You should do that to the 59 too.

The JB has a great clean tone, no worries there.

The JB won't nessessarily be "heavier" with 500k pots but it will sound a bit more agressive. You can always roll a 500k pot down from 10 to get the 250k tones but you can't roll a 250k pot up past 10 to 500k ohms.

I second this. I personally don't like the Jb in series for clean stuff. But the split/parallel it is amazing.

1. i used 500k pots with a jb and i found it a little bright, but i just turned my volume on my guitar down and it sounded perfect.

2. well, it'll sounds brighter, not really heavier

3. Jb cleans are really, even better when split or in parallel wiring, as stated above.

I tried the JB with both 250K and 500K pots and I like the 250K better, makes it a little smoother while retaining the bite. The JB can get really heavy with both value pots.
I guess it depends on if you are running a bright rig or not and how your ears percieve the mids.

I hate to disagree with Robert S on the roll off thing since he knows far more about guitars and gear than me but a 500K pot rolled back to 250k sounds different to my ears than a 250K pot all the way open.

it really depends what amp and stuff your using, but i think 250k pots should suffice

Both will sound good for metal, you should try out both and see what you like. Pots are fairly inexpensive.
Switching pots doesn't change the pickups core voice, but shapes the edges around the sound. A 500K pot will let more highs through than a 250K pot. This can be a good or a bad thing depending on YOUR ears and rig.

Thanks for the info. So if I use 500K pots with the JB and the 59 it will let out more highs and let the pickups work to their full potential. When I get the JB and 59 installed in my strat I will switch from 250K pots to 500K pots and see how the pickups sound.

I agree, my tech and I tried this with a set of pots and the difference was noticable.......and certain pickups just sounded better with the 250k pots...even on ten.

How much does the JB and 59 cost approximately? They are probably expensive because they are very popular.

You can get them for less than $75 a pop pretty much anywhere. Nearly all the humbuckers cost the same, with the Dimebucker and Screamin Demon being the only ones that come to mind that cost more.

Have you thought about 300k's. But all in all a 250 will work fine, Robert did make a good point though.

You're gonna find 100 guys with 100 different ideas on that... the way I do it (and it seems to be pretty popular) is fret the highest note on the E strings, and set the pickup as close as possible. Since we're talking metal, you'll want to adjust a bit to accomodate for palm muting or tremelo use (if your strat has a floyd). That's the way I set the pickups on all my metal guitars, but some people prefer it to have some "breathing room." In the end, there's no right or wrong, just goof around with it until it sounds good.

Thanks for the info. My strat does not have a floyd rose trem. It has a strat style trem. I will have the tech adjust the bridge and neck pickup the usual way.
