Quick demo of the DiMarzio IGNO in a non-Polyphia context

I got this pickup a few months back only because my old teacher had an Ibanez SLM that he liked for playing in pop cover bands.

I remember checking on YouTube and most demos of this pickup were either in a Polyphia-esque Math Rock context or a downtuned metal song. In some rare cases it's an instrumental shred song (which is nice)

So I thought I'd record a quick clip in a classic E standard thrash metal context instead.

This is basically zero post editing, just some high and low pass with the IR, no designer cuts and boosts, post-reverb or comp

Pros:
  • It's really thick in the low mids. If you're the sole guitarist, you will fill up the sonic space very well, and the bassist would still be audible
  • It has a single-coil-like presence that makes it cuts more than, say, an AT-1 or a Tone Zone
Cons:
  • It's really thick in the low mids. If you have another guitarist in the mix, you might muddy things up without a low cut
  • It's VERY compressed. Even more compressed than the Super 3, which is hotter. If you want PAF-like dynamics, play in parallel or look elsewhere.

It didn't come off a super compressed to me. The character of the palm mutes at the begginning where you were really digging in vs. the end where it's softer and alternate picked changed considerably.

Glad to hear the pickup can do more than Polyphia! :)

If we're talking about timbre/character, I'd agree that it's very attack dependent. (Although do also keep in mind I'm using 9s here, so those chugga chuggas are going to behave differently from 10+s)

But it's one of the least volume-knob-reactive pickups I've ever used lol. Even more than the Super 3 or the Anderson HC3+
