Do we know what amp Jimmy Page used to record their 1st album ?

My brother just "discovered" Led Zeppelin, and he love the tone. (on the 1st album)
Seeing that i can not tell him the answer to his question, i thought i'd ask !

Thanx guys

Re: Quick Led Zeppelin question.

Supro but nobody knows which model. Not even Jimmy knew which model it was.

I think it's funny because everyone who owns an old Supro claims it was the one Page recorded the album with.

Re: Quick Led Zeppelin question.

the amp he was using really didn't matter. Just a small tube amp. The star of his sound was the Fuzz box he used and the sweet sweet echo. He also used a tele on the first album, that has a lot to do with it.

This. There are plenty of Tone Bender clones out there - Christian's the one to ask about those. Lots has been said about that particular Tele - I believe it was a '52. Beck gave it to him at one point before Jimmy was even in the Yardbirds. Tape echo... well, it's tape echo.

I've mostly seen 52' around too but a few argue he had a replacement neck because the original 52s didn't have rosewood like his did. He used a Tonebender Mk. II and a wah and echoplex.

I don't really think all this matters though. Get a tele, a small single channel tube amp and a tonebender and you're pretty much set.

Re: Quick Led Zeppelin question.

I'm a Zeppelin freak and I don't even love Jimmy Page's electric tones for the most part. I've never chased his tone because I've always wanted a better one than that.

The bottom line is buy a good sounding tube amp, then a LP, Strat, and Tele. The basic building blocks of classic tones.

He's 33.

He's been listenning to Christain based music ever since he was 19/20.
Before that, it was radio stuff in the 80's, like GNR, Roxette, Michael Learns To Rock, Queen, and other assorted stuff of that era.

Led Zeppelinis NOT that big over here. Not with our generation.
The older guys yes. Age 45 and up.
I am one of the only guys of my age (from my friends) that have any of their CD's.

Re: Quick Led Zeppelin question.

So, acording to you guys, if i read this right.

Anyone (chops permitting) can get a Led Zeppelin-like tone with this :

* Squire Tele : http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/...-Telecaster-Custom-Electric-Guitar?sku=584389 - Heard good things about the stock pick ups.

* Wah

* Tonebender MK II of some sort

* My, Carl Martin DeLayla XL

* Tungsten Mosaic 5F1 clone

How does this look like ?

Led Zeppelin belongs to all generations... it's part of the music culture... like Mozart.

please, don't tell me you/he doesn't know about Deep Purple, ACDC and Black Sabbath.

Hahahahaha, oh we bouth know them, and i have CDs/Records of all of them, but he has never picked up any Deep Purple or Sabbath album - EVER !

Re: Quick Led Zeppelin question.

I had a Gretsch 6150 amp and I used a Mexican strat with stock pickups and got so very close to that tone, sans the echo. I tried to copy it with my Vox Valvetronix AD60VTX, but just couldn't do it. I regret very much selling that amp.

Re: Quick Led Zeppelin question.

Page used Fender amps extensivley during that time frame according to several magazine articles and interveiws. But he is known to use a variety of amps in the studio. Some of the early live video tapes clearly show the use of Hiwatts live too.

In my late teens and early twenties, I studiously avoided Pimple, Wetsnake, the Sabbs and the entire NWOBHM mainly because my brother liked them. Good ol' sibling rivalry. :argue:

The one group in that genre that we could agree on was Gillan. Those guys had a self-deprecating sense of humour that many of the other groups lacked.

Re: Quick Led Zeppelin question.

Lots say it was a Supro Thunderbolt and some say it was a 1624T, but ultimately know one knows.

Re: Quick Led Zeppelin question.

There's a link somewhere in the forum that leads to a page that has detailed info on all the gear page has used through out the years. There's also some info that suggests that page changed the bridge HB on his #1 to one wound by Seymour or MJ (aka the Custom Shop). I can't find it at the moment, but I'll look for it later.
