Quick note for tone

For those of us that had to buy a MIM Fender Tele a quick way to get some better tone out of the guitar is to add a bleed capacitor on the volume pot.

Simply go to Radio Shack and pick up a bag of assorted capacitors and remove the two screws holding the metal cover and turn it over. Try a 221 cap first and solder one side to volume tip one and the other side to volume tip two.

The volume pot is the first pot and the tips I am talking about already have a wire on them

Screw it back together and play. At full volume you will notice nothing but dial the volume back andcyou will notice a much more Tele clean tight tone for about $10.00

This is the kind of modification I can barely perceive, if I ever notice a change at all. I put one of those big orange caps in my guitar and the tone and volume pots seem the same to me, maybe I'm just going deaf.

Sounds like he is talking about a treble bleed mod which is supposed to keep the the guitar from getting muddy as you roll off the volume knob.

Correct - its a treble bleed. Also, it depends on you pickups andbthe value of the cap. Start at 221 and work down to a 1004.

Ill never own another Tele without one.

It all happens when you turn your volume down as well, thats whe the notes get articulate and tight and the mud disappears

its a great simple mod for someone that wants to keep things bright or even brighten things up as you roll it back.

personally i like the fact that it warms up the tone as i roll the volume back

I have a treble bleed in every guitar I own.

It's the common treble bypass mod, sans resistor. $10 bucks is a hell of a lot to pay for one crummy Radio Shack cap. Go to your local independent electronics store and get the one cap and one resistor you need for about 30 cents.

What value cap would you suggest? I just finished my tele buikd and I wanna add this to it

it all depends on how much treble you want but a .002 cap and 100k resistor is a good place to start

I use a 1 nF cap in parallel with a 100k resistor. I've tried almost any sensible permutation of treble bleed you can think of, and that's what I find works best for me.
