Quick tuning machine head question.

So I was installing some Schaller locking tuners on my project guitar, but I guess I didn't read the description well enough and it turns out they're staggered. The headstock is a tiltback style (reverse headstock Jackson neck), so I was wondering if I should try it and hope for the best (keep in mind this is a project, so it may take awhile before I see the result) or should I just send them back? I was googling around, but that yielded mixed opinions.

as long as the machine posts are tall enough to clear the face of the head stock correctly (string Post hole being easily accessible).. then there is no reason why you can't use them..

I used hipshot staggered tuning machines on our tilt back J.Backlund design head stocks with great success.

Awesome! they clear the hole fine, but I was afraid the angle might be too steep and put too much pressure on the string at the nut. Did you install them the normal way or would it be better if I did it reversed, using the tuners with the smaller posts where the angle isn't as harsh?

Well, even vintage LP's had staggered tuners.....effectively. The headstock was a bit thicker on the nut end meaning the E tuners sat lower in the bushing than the others. And even with a regular headstock you will find a variety of angles on strings. If you use the tallest one for the closest to nut position I can't see how that would be much different to the old ones.

Put the shortest peg on the 1st, tallest on the 6th (since it's a reverse head) and it should be fine.
