Re: Quilt Top vs. Flame Top

I very rarely ever like a quilt top. Most of the time they're pretty one dimension and ugly. A guitar with a real flame top, even if it's subtle, can still look impressive.

Re: Quilt Top vs. Flame Top

Personally it all depends on the wood grain and color. I think Flame tops look better with reds and yellows while Quilt tops look better with blues and greens. My favorite top I've ever seen was an Ibanez prestige with a grey flame top...beautiful.View attachment 46969

It's still early but I'm surprised that flame tops have already taken the early lead.

That's a sick flame top.

Re: Quilt Top vs. Flame Top

I usually like flame more than quilt......but a basic quilt is quite nice - nothing too dense.

Re: Quilt Top vs. Flame Top

I tend to like flames more, overall. I like some quilts, but it really depends on the guitar.

Re: Quilt Top vs. Flame Top

I have always hated quilt. I just do not like it all, on a guitar or on a aesthetic lam on a longbow/recurve or a table top. Ick. I had a Tokai with a super quilty top oam, that everyone always comments positively about, and even get some requests if it is still available to buy. I thougyt it was the ugliest les paul I have ever owned.

I dig flame, but the older I get the more particular I am about it, most flame bores me, especially the outrageous tight precison bookmatched flame stained to accent it, and with a hard crystal clear shiny finish like on PRS, Ibanez, Dean USA, etc.

Just some age rings and mineral stains on a plaintop with a good lacquer finish is most appealing to me these days.

Re: Quilt Top vs. Flame Top

Funny, years ago, I liked only 80s metal type guitars in solid colors or graphics. Then thanks to Carvin catalogs, I started like flame and quilt. THEN, I found out what caused the figuring and I got even more into it. I LOVE quilt and really like flame

Re: Quilt Top vs. Flame Top

It depends on the piece of wood and how it is used. Color, grain shape, body shape, other woods involved, hardware shape and color. I like both! But there are times were I don't like one or the other.

Re: Quilt Top vs. Flame Top

To me, there's nothing as beautiful as tiger-stripe flame on a Gibson-design guitar. Quilt usually seems gaudy and excessive, although on some modern guitars it can look nice.

Re: Quilt Top vs. Flame Top

I've never much liked quilt tops on guitars. Furniture, yes. Give me a medium Flame top on any guitar, any time.

With the exception of course of anything with a Floyd Rose bridge. :D
