Flame.

Every now n then a quilt top comes along that makes me realize what a terrible country America is.

^ Take all you want. I can't stand it. : party:

Re: Quilt Top vs. Flame Top

I like both. I have a quilted Les Paul Elegant in Peacock Blue, in the sunlight it is so three-dimensional...you could fall in and drown. My '59 Reissue has a top that is kind of a mix of both quilt AND flame...beautiful and unique. A couple of my other Pauls have deep flame but the best top of all might be on my ASAT Deluxe.

I'll say flame, but it really depends on the top and the color.

I always liked birdseye the best :|
Also, anyone know why flame was called flame when quilt looks more flamey and flame looks more like a fabric?

Re: Quilt Top vs. Flame Top

In most cases - plain tops. Something like this Les Paul:

Between the two existing options - Flame.

Re: Quilt Top vs. Flame Top

Of the two, I prefer flame. The "looser" and more uneven, the better. Loose flame is way sexier and more natural looking to me than tight, bookmatched flame. I love guitars on which one piece of the body has regular grain, but another piece has just a little figuring. MMMMF!! HOT! But in general, I prefer plain tops with straight grain or very little visible grain...like an alder Strat or a pine Tele.

Here is why I prefer quilted maple, it just looks much more "wild" which I like:

I still love me some flame though:

Now this is a flame top I do not care that much for; it is just "too perfect" looking:

Re: Quilt Top vs. Flame Top

there are some quilt tops that are super tight and look almost flamed, and then there are some flame tops that are 'wavy' enough to look like quilt. IMO that's the best you get from either of them, but at the end of the day, I think Burl takes the cake
