Rack case

To put it simply, I am looking for a 12U rack where wheels are either standard or easily addable, and that has two handles next to each other (not on top of each other) on both sides. Other than that it should be as light as possible; shock rack not necessary.

Any suggestions? Gator and SKB both seem to be off the table.

Re: Rack case

I have both Gator and SKB both are great products. I am not sure about overseas but they can be found cheap on the secondary market here in the US. Wheels are a good idea. Racks that big get heavy quickly especially when you start adding power amps.

Re: Rack case

Big racks get heavy FAST!

I had a 12-space Peavey with our two CS-800 amps, x-over, and EQ. I couldn't lift it into the van by myself, but everybody would disappear when it was time to load out! LOL!

Wheels won't help you lift!

Re: Rack case

That is exactly why I'd like to a get a light four-handle case: that would make the whole scenario as pleasant as possible. (getting help to lift it won't be a problem)

Doesn't look like Anvil do any reduced weight cases; admittedly their web page is not very intuitive.

Anvil is built like a tank but very expensive and there is a lot of added weight. I have a similar road case for one of my heads and it is a monster.

Re: Rack case

Indeed. Had I been touring the world with my own roadies that might have been the go-to brand, but this is going to be moved by four dweebs in a band, so something slightly lighter would probably be better.

Re: Rack case

I'd say a lot depends on your use. Mounting heavy power amps...get a heavy Anvil type. Anything less will fall apart. For processors like EQs, x-overs, reverbs, delays, auto-tune (really?), compressors...a lightweight rack will do...for local gigs and studio use. But touring...buy the heaviest-duty case you can get.

Re: Rack case

No tube power amps will be going into it (I'll keep the Marshall 9100 in a separate 4U case, should I ever need it). It will have a lighter solid state power amp in it. In time I may migrate to the new SD power amps: they aren't quite ideal, but they are light, and that is enticing.

If you want a light SS power amp, get a smaller rackmount class-D PA amp. I'm not sure what to recommend as I don't know what's available in Europe.

Re: Rack case

Recommend what you would normally recommend, and I'll see what I can find! Where there is a will there is often a way.

I was going to say Carvin because they're cheap over here and frequently have 1/4" I/O so that you don't need adapters. It really doesn't matter as long as you have the wattage and I/O connectivity that you need.

Re: Rack case

Tempting, but I will have to see how my rig develops. I love Greenbacks, and the PowerStage isn't exactly scaled to work with them. But I'll see how things develop. They are definitely a possibility!

Re: Rack case

Well, people keep saying that. I am a PhD in musicology, not arithmetics, mind you, but as far as I can tell a rack set-up based around a high quality multi-fx (I'm going for a G-System since I don't want people to think I'm bigoted when I badmouth Denmark! ;) ) will have significantly fewer cables than the now-fashionable pedal boards. It also means that you don't have to worry as much about the drunk guy who is swinging his beer around.

Of course I need not get entirely rid of the stomp boxes, but I will be a happy man if I don't have to see them in front of me any more.
