Rack users -your preference?

Hey guys. I'm going to be in need of a 4-space rack in the coming months, and I'd like to know what you guys recommend for something durable, secure, and reasonably priced? I'll probably be putting this underneath the amp head/on top of the cab when playing live so stability on limited real estate is a must.

Re: Rack users -your preference?

Don't know. I never sat it on top of a cab. It always sat on the floor. A head will be wider than it is for sure, I know that much.

Re: Rack users -your preference?

i use a gator rack, with the pull-out handle w/wheels. Wheels rock. Wheels should be on everything.

Re: Rack users -your preference?

Racks are like belts. Don't buy one that only closes on the last loop. Get something that gives you a little room.

Re: Rack users -your preference?

SKB X-Rack - shallow ones, fit on heads and cabs better, just make sure your gear fits - some guitar preamps are too long to fit an XRack.

Re: Rack users -your preference?

Shock mount FTW.

I used to have a 4 space SKB before I got my 10 space shock mount. I put it on top of my amp, and it didn't really move.

Re: Rack users -your preference?

Go for a 6 rack unit so you can fit stuff in it later

Good point... 6 spacers aren't that much of a price jump up. Basically I'll need one space for an effect processor, one for a power conditioner, two for a drawer. I guess the rest can be empty.

I'll look into those, thanks.

Yeah, get this one......the shallow SKB. Then it won't be hanging off the back of your amp.

And don't let yourself get caught up in 'rack-itis.' Get the 4 space and force yourself to not buy more rack gear. :nono:

Re: Rack users -your preference?

Seriously - if you're only planning on having 2 spaces now, with 2 more for a drawer... that's all you're going to need, really.

Re: Rack users -your preference?

1. Get at least 2 spaces more than you need (you´ll realize why soon after you own one)
2. I personally will never use anything other than a full bore ata-style rack, because everything else is just stupid IMO... I´ve seen people with 25k worth of equipment in a 50$ rack, and then they´re surprised when it get´s knocked against a door frame once and dropped twice and the total damage is 10k.

I completely agree... I have had nothing less than Anvil... and used that stuff for more than 15 years... the only problem I have ever had is that I actually broke the leather on the handle.. my stuff stayed safe even on planes...

I have never felt safe with some of the other brands... but then again... I am harder on my equipment...

Indeed.

Plastic racks suck. The lids & those dinky latches REALLY suck. The lid on my one remaining SKB needs to be gaff taped into place for transport.

Last 'new' rack I bought was a "Road Ready" brand 6-banger for about $160. Solid plywood sides (3/8" I think) & super overbuilt the whole way around. Anvil, Calzone...lotz o' places to get something like that.

I have no doubts that my plywood & metal racks will outlive me! Not to mention the piece of mind with my gear inside...
