Rail pickup for middle position

Re: Rail pickup for middle position

I use 500k pots. With 250k pots I would definitely go for CR neck.

I planned to split the rails in 2 and 4 so bridge/middle and neck/middle go series or parallel with one blade only, and have hum cancelling.
I have used the same idea to provide hum cancelling between the cool rails and a strat bridge pickup. Choosing the SCR-1n gives the option to choose different value control pots or otherwise add a parrallel load resistor if you desire a warmer tone. Good luck with whatever you choose.

I prefer to use fixed tone control with resistor and cap for warmer tone with 500k pots. Gives more flexibility and retains the lower frequency punch you get with 500k volume.

Re: Rail pickup for middle position

I think I'll go for HR neck. CR neck would possibly have too little output as I prefer to keep middle pickup low. Bridge models generally seem to have significantly more scooped tone to begin with, so I think CR bridge might be too scooped in middle.

I keep thread open to post results when I get there.

Re: Rail pickup for middle position

Haven't updated this project for a while I got quite busy and on the same time got stuck with wiring plans for the project. Everything else is quite finished by now, but couldn't get myself into engineering the wiring... Finally I got it cleared.

Just final question before I go to heat the solder: Which coil of the rail is hum-cancelling with which single coil pickup? I have rwrp Twangbanger in bridge and regular (tapped) SSL-7 neck.

Re: Rail pickup for middle position

With the Black to the switch and Red/White Grounded, you will activate the north coil on the Rails pickup. That will be hum-cancelling with the SSL-7 which is south polarity. I don't know the magnetic polarity for the Tangbanger. If you say its RWRP, then it would be easy to assume you need the other coil.

Thanks! That's pretty clear now.

Re: Rail pickup for middle position

Well. Having played with the guitar for a while now and setting up the wiring, I'm quite convinced to switch out the Hot Rails Neck. It's way too high-mid heavy in general and really flat sounding at the same time. Really dry. It's also much less "hot" than I expected, I couldn't lower it as low as I wanted.

So next I guess I'm going to pick up Hot Rails bridge to try there, and drop it way down level with pickguard...

Re: Rail pickup for middle position

The Hot Rails bridge will also be seriously mid heavy, even dropped down that low.

Re: Rail pickup for middle position

a bridge hot rails in parallel might be ok but in series, its gonna be very thick sounding. way more output than the neck version though

Re: Rail pickup for middle position

I think a Cool Rails would be a better choice overall- you could put it as close to the strings as you want, and it won't sound thick at all.

Re: Rail pickup for middle position

Actually that's exactly why I ordered Hot Rails bridge.

I want to set it as low as I can (because pickup close to the strings right where I pick feels awkard). HR neck has to be set too close to balance with singles.

I'm also splitting it in middle postions (parallel and series), and Twangbanger in bridge seriously overpowers HR neck that way. I barely hear any difference between 4 & 5 positions.

I don't really mind how the HR bridge sounds alone in series in middle, as in this setup it's not what I'm aiming at. I'm never much cared about middle humbucker tone anyway.

HR bridge is in the mail. I'll post update when I get it.
