Random Black Winter love

I think the Black Winters are far more versatile than they get credit for. Their packaging easily allows them to be stereotyped as black metal and only allowed to be played in Norway...lol. I think they are an incredible set.

The Black Winter is pretty sensitive to height, too. Lowering it is warmer without much high end. Almost like a totally different pickup when set low. I think I found the sweet spot with 1 nickel on treble side and 2 nickels on bass side with all pole peices slightly out.

Exactly right. You do have to play around with pickup height a fair bit. When I first got them, I had them too close to the strings and it was overpowering. Backing them down, with the treble side a bit higher, has made a big difference, especially to the bridge.

Yes I had the same issue at first. Too high up. You want the treble side bit higher for sure on them also. Took me a good hour to get it to where I wanted it. Every little turn changes so much.

I don't know for certain, but my impression from reviews is that SD didn't expect how popular the Winters would become across different genres. And now, they seem reluctant to dispel the original "for kvlt black metal fanatics only" label, for reasons I can only guess at. But regardless, I agree. They are really a superbly versatile set of pickups and probably my favorite in SD's catalog!

The font, the packaging, the promo text, the fact that the Winters are still only available in NONE MORE BLACK ... come on, Seymour, acknowledge what your customers already know! These pickups are for everyone, not just black metal players! :P

More color options would be awesome.

I just ordered the neck on sale new for $74. I will finally have the set. Can't wait!

I think they're a great set, it's a really nice neck. I kept making the mistake of putting them as high as possible in my LP and I didn't love them at times. I realized, like others have said in this thread, that you find their sweet spot (I guess that's true for most things) and they can be glorious.

Just goes to show you that Black Metal aficionados are just a bit more discriminating when it comes to tone. Because as it turns out, if you play clean or crunch, the basic tone still sounds good.

You can get black winters in white.

I always thought the Black Winter was more of a Melodeath thing because of the Amorphis reference? Or just Scandinavian in general.
