Re: RANDY live vid!

Are these from the live vid that came with the deluxe reissue of diary and bilzzard? I was so pissed when I found Sharon wasn't going to allow that vid to be released on its own without having to buy the deluxe set at $150.

Not sure i found these over at the CHARVEL forum,
I hate when camera guy is on someone else when the guitarist is on the soloing!
Too bad the camera was not on the other side of the stage.
the guy that hosted these on youtube has some more stuff from 81 also

Nice to see the cameraman figured out how to work the zoom at the last minute.

Ah, yes, it's a time-honored legacy of stupidity in filming concerts.

Re: RANDY live vid!

If you guys haven't had the chance to check out the reissue of Diary, there's a live CD with it as well. It's same set list as Tribute, but from a different show. Absolutely stellar. I've been A/Bing it w/ Tribute all week and I'm liking it a lot more than the original printing of Tribute.

I've got all 3 prints of the Tribute album and this new one setup in a playlist and the new is quickly becoming my favorite. You can hear a lot more Randy's subtleties in his playing and his tone is monstrous!

Re: RANDY live vid!

Thanks for the vids!

I saw him on this tour. Even as a kid I did not like the sound of his Jacksons (he played both the white and a black one)- it was so piercing and harsh. At the time I was all over "believer" and "you can't kill R&R". When Randy pulled out the White Jackson for Believer, it cut through my eardrums like a rusty saw blade. I had to cover my ears everytime he played either Jackson.

The Sandoval (and his Les Paul) sounds so much better to me then, and still do.

RIP Randy!

Oddly enough, his Jackson's were his only guitars loaded with Duncans. His V had a Super Distortion/PAF combo in it and his LP was bone stock. I'm not sure about the neck spot, but on the Jackson's, I'm pretty sure he had a Duncan Distortion in the bridge spot. Can't remember if it was the Jazz or 59 he had in the neck. I've read a couple articles that said he would not touch the EQ section on his amps and he wasn't much of a tweaker of the knobs on the road. In the studio though, he was a perfectionist. Didn't make much sense to me, but he made it work somehow.

Re: RANDY live vid!

I cannot say for sure whether it's the pups, the typical Jackson choice of woods, or he just didn't dial them in better for those two guitars- or a combination of any of them. But it was brutal in a bad way (as I was not a "smoker" nor would I drink cos I actually wanted to enjoy the performance and watch the players- I tend to fairly well remember most of those now classic shows I went to :D )

That said, never been a big fan of maple/alder neck through construction, or the Duncan Distortion in my own noodlings with them. Just don't get along with my particular set of ears.

Dude, everyone has their own tone. And some combinations just DON'T work. I LOVE the sound of P90s when other people play them ... whenever I play with P90s: Instant ham sandwich!!

Re: RANDY live vid!

LOL- ham sandwich.Yeah, it's just a personal "never worked for me" deal Ben. Just discussing, not criticizing :D

Re: RANDY live vid!

Ed already said it, if only that camera man had been on the other side of the stage. Randy sounded like he was having a great night. Thanks for posting Ed

Re: RANDY live vid!

Wow... back when even heavy metal had a guitar sound that still sounded like... wait for it... a GUITAR!

I'm literally on the way out the door to play a backyard 4th party for fun (It's been a tradition at my mom's for the past couple of years and since my dad passed, we are still doing it haha), and I am feeling VERY inspired by Randy! God Bless him!
