Hey guys,
I was wondering if any of you know what kind of pickups Randy Rhoads used in his guitars. Please let me know if any of you have ideas. Also, I have a Rhoads and I am putting in some knew pickups. Any ideas on what I should do?
Let me know

Re: Randy Rhoads

IIRC

PAFs in his LPC
Super DIstortions in his Polkadot
Duncan Distortion set in the Jacksons

I´m pretty sure, but not 100% ;)

What kind of rhoads, thru what kind of amp, and you´re looking for a tone similar to...........?

Re: Randy Rhoads

the black polka dot V had Dimarzios for sure...a PAF Pro and a Super D I belive but I could be wrong, his Jackson V's had Duncan Distortions in the bridge and Jazzs in the neck his LP Custom was stock...

You can get a decent RR tone with just about any pickups...the key to his tone was an MXR Distortion Plus (he left it on all the time) and an MRX EQ with a massive puch in the mids...JMP marshall heads and cabs loaded with Altec 12's he also had an MXR Flanger and stereo chorus on his board as well as a stock crybaby...the stereo chorus was last on the board and is also where his signal was split...one side went to a Roland Space Echo then to a Marshall stack while the other side went to a Yamaha rack mount delay to the other marshall stack.

Re: Randy Rhoads

Not to argue Christian, but I´m pretty sure the Jazz neck didn´t end up in a Rhoads until they actually started production.... IIRC there was something about him wanting to demo the Jazz in the NAMM rhoads (which was supposed to be his but he passed on too early), but his guitars until then including the black one were supposedly loaded D/D ....that´s why pretty much all of the shortwing and LTD reissues have had dual Distortions.....

Re: Randy Rhoads

Pups aside -don't forget the train of MXR effects with a big goosed mid! And of cousr, the fingers...

He'sone of those pups are only the first 10% guys. And honestly, while I love the guy's work -his tone rarely impressed me.

Re: Randy Rhoads

standard/original DiMarzio PAF (not the pro) in the neck of the Sandoval, Christian.

somewhat tangential: Apparently...alot of those 70s LP customs had some real hot wind bridge pups...up to about 12K, has anyone ever heard about this/had one?

Re: Randy Rhoads

hey guys,
thanks for the help so far. I am running it through a peavey bandit 112 amp. The only pedals I have are the boss ds-1 and ac-2. I have a gibson sg Iommi signature series and I love the Iommi pickups. I'm not exactly sure what kind of sound I want from the Rhoads yet. Probably something warm, and relatively versatile. So far the SD Jazz in the neck and the JB in the bridge have been recommended. I am not too sure yet. Any other suggestion as to what could give me a warm and versatile sound. I usually like to play from the neck pickup. Just hit me with suggestions, cause I'm open to trying some variation.
Thanks again for all the help so far.

Re: Randy Rhoads

personally I'm no fan of the JB, Jazz or Duncan distortion.. none are warm at all, IMO.

I'd put a DiMarzio SuperD/PAF in it, or in the Duncan line a Custom bridge and PG neck for a hotter setup or Blues trembucker/Alnico Pro neck for a warmer setup.

Re: Randy Rhoads

I beleive DiMarzio Super D's were in quite a few of his guitars and one of his favs. Although JB's seem to tackle his stuff pretty well. As TGWIF said, MXR distortion will help you on your way for sure.
