Anybody know what Kind of Pick-up Randy Rhoads used? some of the tracks he did with ozzy, the guitar just seems to have a lot of attack and a "wet" type of sound to me. Nnybody know what pick-up?

Re: Randy Rhoads?

i believe it was stock pickups in the custom les paul, SuperDistortion/PAF pro in the V and distortion/jazz in the jackson rhoads

Re: Randy Rhoads?

Yeah, but your best bet for his wetness (I agree on that description) would be the Dimarzio Superdistortion/PAF, with a MXR Distortion + being used as a boost.

Re: Randy Rhoads?

Thanks, I was looking for it on american musical and could find superdistortion paf i jsut saw superdistortion, Thanks

What is PAF? whats that stand for?
"Patent Applied For" it was a sticker put on the first gibson humbuckers that are known for having some of the best sounds (arguably of course). Its often a term used to describe pickups that sound simmilair to those original pickups

the SuperDistortion is the name of the pickup in the bridge position the DiMarzio PAF is the name for the pickup in the neck position

Re: Randy Rhoads?

Thanks man, now I know what to put in my Jackson Randy Rhoads and get to sound just like his ( I hope haha)

Re: Randy Rhoads?

That pickup combo is amazing and versitile, (though I am in the midst of switching out my bridge.. the Super Distortion is too much for the kind of music I play mostly now)

If they were stock pickups, he took the covers off.
distortion/jazz in the jackson rhoads
distortion/JB in the rhoads. Weird combo. Especially since a Jackson V is a very bright guitar. That's why his sound is incredibly IN YOUR FACE.

The covers never came off his Les Paul pickups. They have gold covers and remained on. Of his 3 main axes, the two V's had no covers and his Les Paul had covers.

The very first Jackson ever built, which is the white V that he had (there are two of them actually), has a Distortion / Jazz combo from what I have read. This V is not the same V that is available now. Very different guitar. The shape is even different from his first Jackson.

The Polka Dot V does have the DiMarzio Super Distortion / PAF combo. Look for model DP103 when looking for the DiMarzio PAF. The Super Distortion is model DP100.

Either pairing (DiMarzios or Duncans) will get you in the ballpark, but not exact. There are more factors to the tone than the pickups. They're just a part of the beginning. Amp, speakers, effects, all will contribute.

Re: Randy Rhoads?

There was just a long thread on this...sort of. Play like randy - something to aspire to. Sound like him- uh -no thanks.

Re: Randy Rhoads?

In the late 70's the speaker he would be using is the Celestion G65. It's available as a classic re-issue for about $180 each.
