Rarebird Guitars!

Re: Rarebird Guitars!

The guitars look really cool, but I agree with people saying he needs to work on his finishes more. I like the style of the guitars and assuming they play and sound nice he's 80% of the way there.

Perhaps your apprenticeship will be more valuable to both of you if you bring some helpful suggestions along with you about finishing (made in a non-critiquing way of course).

Like I said, that's just his way. Kinda like if I picked up your guitar and played it through your amp I'd still sound just like me. You just can't help being who you are. That "look" is just Bruce Clay's way. I know him. That look reflects his personality and the way his mind works.

You got your Di Vinci and you got your Rembrandt, and you got your Van Gogh and you got your Picasso and Jackson Pollack. Some guys are very skillful, detailed and precise by nature, and some are not.

Re: Rarebird Guitars!

I know what you're saying, Lew. Finish work and photography skills aside, I've seen furniture makers who do the same kind of over-sanded, hand-formed thing. It IS a preference thing.

In fact, maybe that's what is weird to me about his designs. They remind me of hand-made furniture

"...he mainly makes hollowbodys with no f holes..."

From what I can see in the pics, at least 11 of them have f holes.

They certainly look "homemade", but as was suggested, if they sound and play great and if the price is right then that's the important thing. Right?

I, on the other hand, am not only critical about how my guitar plays and sounds and how much it costs, but my instruments have to look perfect.

Re: Rarebird Guitars!

I know that guy. Bruce Clay! Not my brother, Bruce Collins. He's in Arvada, Colorado and has been around forever. At least twenty years. He does do nice work. That bridge tailpiece thingie is not his creation. Maybe it's made by Wilkinson or Hipshot or somebody.

yeah! thats him! hes a good dude, i cant wait to get started working with him

yeah those picturd are only a select few of what he has done. but he really does focuse mainly on hollowbody without f holes, and i got the chace to play a couple...let me tell you. the sustain was UNBELIEVABLE. played it through a Laney 15 watt head and ugh, it was amazing.

Re: Rarebird Guitars!

I think you should have him send me one for a review, and I'll even post some nice hi-res photos.

It's a win/win.

Let's make this happen.
