Re: Rarest guitar you've played? Most expensive?

I had the lucky opportunity as a boy to look at an original '55 Gretsch White Falcon. My grandfather owned it (and the Vibrolux Reverb I have now). He used to play in a few different bands, one I think was western/countryish. He sold it in '93 for (I believe) 15 grand. Boy I wish that thing was still around, it's been one of my dream guitars ever since.

Re: Rarest guitar you've played? Most expensive?

Rarest: a guy named Jason had a rare purple jackson V back in the 80's that was pretty cool. I've never seen or heard of another

Most Expensive? In today $$$ they are worth a lot but not so much when I played 'em. Either a 60's Gibson 335 that a friend had. This was when we were about 14 yrs old and he was just starting lessons. Or a 1969 Les Paul Deluxe (100% original) I used to trade him over night , he'd borrow my Ibanez with a Floyd Rose knockoff and I'd take his vintage Les Paul home for the night. I didnt' know what he had, he didn't care that he had it (he still has it)

Re: Rarest guitar you've played? Most expensive?

A D'Angelico would likely be the rarest of signifigance.

Most expensive? Likely the same though I have played a few 'bursts and they're pretty pricey these days.

Re: Rarest guitar you've played? Most expensive?

most expensive? probably a money burst lp, ive had my hands on a '58 and '59 or a old d'angelico
rarest? i got a 1959 guild hollowbody that is one of a kind, so thats pretty rare

Re: Rarest guitar you've played? Most expensive?

Back in August of last year when I was recording the guitar tracks for my band's first demo, the engineer and proprietor of the studio talked a bit about guitars. In addition to running NightSky Studios in Waldorf, MD he's also the guitarist for Aurora Borealis a signed speed/death metal band. While I was recording, he showed me a few of the guitars he had around the studio, most of them being Custom Shop Jacksons valued anywhere between $2000 and $8000. When I say that he showed them to me, he literally only showed them to me since he didn't let anyone play them except when renting.

The one guitar that he showed me and let me play was a Custom Shop Jackson King V that was built and designed as a back-up guitar for Dave Mustaine. He was friends with one of Megadeth's old guitar techs who received the guitar from Mustaine as a present. He traded the guy a few guitars for it and he assured me that it was the real deal. Natural Gloss finished all Korina body with ebony fingerboard, medium frets, twin SD JB's, a fixed Kahler tailpiece, and Dave Mustaine's signature on the headstock in silver permanent marker. That was easily one of the rarest and nicest guitars I've ever played.

Re: Rarest guitar you've played? Most expensive?

I played a collings acoustic the other day in my local music shop...man that was a nice acoustic tone!

Re: Rarest guitar you've played? Most expensive?

The rarest how bout a (from what im told) 1933 dobro all electric ....was given to me by my wife's uncle who had it in his closet for over 25 years.. I am trying to find out more about this guitar but am coming up short...its been refinished (blah) which brought the value down abit im sure...if anyone knows anything about it let me know ...ive got pics if ya want to see it ..selling it???? hell if the price is right who knows ..but kind of looking at getting it brought back to life...I have been told it was one of the first after the ricky frying pan was invented...again hear say ...let me know !!!!!!!

Re: Rarest guitar you've played? Most expensive?

I played Larry Corsica's real '59 Burst at an LPF jam in Greensboro earlier this year. It was a rare and special treat - felt nothing like the reissues....very lightweight and thinner neck. Very cool indeed.

Re: Rarest guitar you've played? Most expensive?

My buddy's '57 Strat. First with the original pickups, and later with the Antiquity 1 set we installed in a replacement pickguard (hey, he plays the thing regularly :) ).

Re: Rarest guitar you've played? Most expensive?

I played Paul Reed Smith's personal Dragon guitar which was the first one made (proto 001). I also played a custom ordered McNaught signature with tree of life inlays and one of the most intense and beautiful quilt tops I've ever seen. As for vintage, I once owned a 1952 Les Paul goldtop with trapeze tailpiece and P-90s.

I'm not far from Rudy's - it is a nice store in which to look...not sure you'd want to buy anything since you find much better deals from online dealers.

Re: Rarest guitar you've played? Most expensive?

Hey Guys, Just found this old thread and thought I'd better fess up!
I went to the Hard Rock Cafe here in London and done the tour of 'The Vault'. It's a basement room which is basically a real vault full of gear too expensive to display in the cafes. At the end of the tour you could, under supervision, handle some of the items for photographs, etc.
The rarest thing I played was probably Duane Allman's No.19 Strat (my heart skipped a beat!) or Jeff Beck's Yardbirds era Esquire - The butterscotch one with his name scratched into the back (my knees went weak!!) BTW the neck is like a bat.
But the most expensive thing I held and (tried to) play was one of Jimi Hendrix's Custom made leftie Gibson flying V's that he used at the Isle of Wight festival in 1970 (I was literally shaking when my hand clamped around the neck and took hold of it).
What can I say? If you can get to the Hard Rock Cafe in London and take the Free tour of the vault - Do it!!
I'm going back with some Bud's and a camera VERY soon.

Re: Rarest guitar you've played? Most expensive?

Rarest must be one of Django's Maccaferis that a friend of mine owned...sounded just like the records.

Most expensive was probably a 30's D'Angelico prototype New Yorker...sounded like a piano.

Re: Rarest guitar you've played? Most expensive?

Rarest: a ´58 Explorer while on a US trip about ten years ago... we were going through Nashville on the way to Memphis, and somehow or other I managed to convince my dad to go by George Gruhn´s shop :headbang:

Most expensive: to be honest, I don´t think I´ve ever held another guitar with a 6 digit price tag in my hands, so probably if not certainly the same Explorer :laugh2:

Re: Rarest guitar you've played? Most expensive?

A guy in the local theatre group has a really old Hofner semi acoustic. Either that or a Fender Broadcaster.

Re: Rarest guitar you've played? Most expensive?

Oldest would be This Old Old Gibson L-00 Acoustic My cleaning lady had. She kept telling me she had an old Gibson guitar that Her mother had Purchased Sumtime Right after world war II, And I figured she was just messing with me. But One day she brought it over while she was cleaning the house and let me check it out. And I was amazed ,Oldest guitar I've ever seen in my life. it Had the weird Old style sunburst (almost entirely black with a Small brownish area in the middle about 5 inches at its widest) and the Head stock said "the Gibson" in cursive lettering. Then She forgot it at my house that day. I called her and told her she'de forgot it and to come get it, she says "Oh no, Its just been setting around my house for years No one plays guitar here, I want you to keep it. I'de rather sumone used it than for it to just set around and collect dust." But I told her it was probably worth a bunch of money and That She should really take it back, cause I probably wouldn't use it since it was so old and I was scared I'de break it on accident or sumthing. So I made her Take it back.
And The Most Expensive Guitar I've ever played was a 1958 Lp Custom that was totally stock. I was Driveing Back to Illinois From Kansas, and I was in Kansas City and tired. And I remembered My cousin becky lived in Kansas city, so I called my mother ,got her number, called Becky to see if I could sleep at her house for the night. She said it was fine with her, and it would give me a chance to meet her New husband. She'de just gotten married and no one else in the family had met her new husband. So I got directions and went to her house. When I got inside her husband was setting on the couch, He's an Old dude, Much older than becky. So he's setting there playing a black Lp custom and I said "Ahh nice guitar man, I've always wanted an Lp Custom" and he was just like "oh yeah, me too" and I didn't really think anything of it. So he sets the guitar in a crappy little folding stand and starts talkin to me. And I ask if I can play his guitar a little and he says its fine. So I'm setting there Playing this guitar just assumeing its an 80's Lp custom or sumthing cause its a little old looking and the finish is all checked and Theres tons of little hairline cracks Covering it. And it played really nice. So Eventully He decides to Mention "Oh yeah I Bought that thing used in the early 60's For about $500 dollars." and I'm thinking Uhm, They didn't make Lps in the early 60's. And I ask what year it is, and he says "Its a 58," and I immediately stopped playing and put it back on the stand. This dudes Letting Someone he's Never met before in His Life play His 58 Lp Custom, without even mentioning that its A massively expensive Vintage guitar. I was Totally terrified that I might accidentally scratch it or sumthing and then he would have to kill me. But apperently he still Gigs with the guitar. Seriously.
After that He made a point of takeing me to His Basement and showing me all his other gear, and The Dudes Basement was like being in a museum. Tons of Vintage guitars, amps, and pedals, Plus newer guitars and amps and pedals too. And Amazingly the dude Kept offering For me To try everything out "Oh yeah thats my 54 Telecaster, Wanna Play it?" and all this other sh!t. And I just kept being like "um dude, seriously I'm a little to scared to play a guitar that old if its not mine. I'de have to kill myself if I scratched it" and he'de just laugh and be like "ehh don't worry about it, if they've lasted this long I'm sure they're not gonna crumble to dust". Seriously the Most mellow dude I have ever met. But anyways I pretty much refused to play anything that he had that was older than me. Just cause he might not have cared if it got scratched, I cared. I'm Pretty much a total stranger to this dude, and he's willing to let me sleep in his house & play his guitars. Theres No way I would even risk messing sumthing up, So i refused to touch any of it.
