Re-Stocked a Strat.

De-Callaham'ed a Strat. Loved that bushing but oh, underestimated how much brighter it was with that bridge.

Sometimes stock is best despite the warts.

Re: Re-Stocked a Strat.

I am thinking to de-Callaham my 1995 Fender Am Std Stratocaster prior to selling it or trading it in.

Re: Re-Stocked a Strat.

You sure you can get it apart? Must be a lot of something on those threads holding it together by now. :D

Re: Re-Stocked a Strat.

Everybody always assumes aftermarket bridges are better, but sometimes too much sustain translates into brightness and a hard edge.

I bought TonePros bridges for my PRS wrap-around McCartys, and they sounded bright, cutting, and too much sustain. I put the originals back on and the guitars had a nice sweet tone again. Ted McCarty and Leo Fender weren't dummies.

Re: Re-Stocked a Strat.

I am just surprised that there is a large difference to the trem on a custom shop Strat. Is that a 6-point or 2-point on the CS?

Re: Re-Stocked a Strat.

I bought a brass GFS bridge/block. It was good and it was a noticeable change after I put it on the strat I had. It gave it a lot of sustain but if a guitar already has a sound you like, you should just use it. I think sometimes we get caught up too much in upgrading everything we can to make it better, when it actuality it might not make it better but just be different. the strat I have right now sounds perfect and it's just a stock MIJ strat with a new bridge pup (quarter pound).

Re: Re-Stocked a Strat.

I was thinking that a 6-point Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster tremolo (which makes it a CS reissue) should have a rolled steel block just like the Callaham.

Re: Re-Stocked a Strat.

I think its a different alloy and the blocks are powder-coated.

Fender insists their's is the same as was used in 1954 but with all the crap flung around on the interwebz, who is really telling the truth? Could be the C suppiler's 1018 alloy is a wee bit different than Fender but still is an 1018 alloy. Could be even the processing.

Gotoh has a really nice milled steel block vintage trem bridge. I'd go for that just on basis of price.

Re: Re-Stocked a Strat.

Correct approach to upgrading your guitar:

"I like my guitar, but it has one specific problem I'd like to solve."

Incorrect approach to upgrading your guitar:

"For no good reason whatsoever, I want my guitar to have the best <part_name> available! I'll go on the Internets and see what everyone thinks is the best <part_name>, then I'll buy it!!!"

Another incorrect approach to upgrading your guitar:

"My guitar is okay, I guess ... I'll just throw some money at it until I love it!!!"

The thing I always ask people when they want an upgrade is: "what problem are you trying to solve?" 9 times out of 10 they have no answer.

Re: Re-Stocked a Strat.

Or its "I hear a lot of hype about this product - Lets try it out and see if it lives up to the hype".

Re: Re-Stocked a Strat.

Often, the "problem" is a desire to try and turn a particular make/model of guitar into something that it is not.
