ya know, I don't mean to hijack the thread into something other than metal fretless fretboards, but I had this idea a while ago when I thought I was going to be a shredder, but hated tall frets because I was stupid. Why not make a glass fretboard using cloisonne techniques? You could have all sorts of fret delineations built into the design, then wet-sand it down to radius.
Here's an example of cloisonne, which is, in it's original form, melted glass poured into glass relief and polished. It's an ancient artform in both occidental and oriental history.
