reccomend me some "not-so-slinky" strings

Hey all,

I've been a longtime user of Ernie Ball Slinkys. I have a Les Paul, however, where I'm getting lots of low E rattle (even with the action relatively high). A guitar tech reccomended using some strings that aren't so "slinky" to help reduce this (less string movement).

Any reccomendations? I use 10s. Also - I do NOT like pure nickel.. too muddy for me.

Acoustic strings! Set of, like 13s... I loved them on my Strat, made it impossible to do anything with the trem though, but I don't foresee that problem on a Paul. They really do a lot to improve the tone, IMO. Once I get my Paul in, that's the first thing I'm gonna do (after, you know, changing the pickups and all the electronics... heh).

Over the last year, I've moved to Ernie Ball 11-48 on my Strat. I'm not sure if you were looking for thicker gauges (12s, or 13s). I've stuck with them because of they sound 'fatter.' Many of my buddies have commented on how thick my Strat sounds compared to the 'thin' sound people expect.

If you're already using EB, I suggest just moving up a gauge. I've also had the Classic Rock set on there (http://www.ernieball.com/products/strings/pure-nickel-strings/) and it's also worth checking out.

EDIT: Sorry, those Classic Rock sets are pure nickel (didn't see that part in your original post). I'm leaving it on there for anyone else who may search this later.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I don't really want to go up a guage.. at least not on the high strings. I like the feel of a 10 high E. If someone made a 10-48 (or 50) set or something like that, that might be cool.

To clarify, I'm basically looking to get a set where the wound strings aren't "slinky".. that is - (I think) there's a thicker core wire and thinner wrap. I've tried a set of pure nickel Gibson "Vintage Reissue" which had the desired "non-slinky" effect but the tone was just blah and mushy for overdriven rock. What I'm looking for is some kind of a "rock-freindly" alloy string that's not "slinky". Does that make sense?:beerchug:

I'd recommend some elixirs too, I use them on all my guitars except my agile. On the agile I use EB not so slinky (actually says that on the package) and they are 12-56. I like the EBs alot, but need to file my string slots a little now since before I had 11-46's.

I still say go with the acoustic strings. Steel core with a phosphor bronze winding though, sounds like heaven IMO. Try a D'Addario EXP15 set; 10-47. I haven't found a set of Martins with a 10, but when I do I'll post it here.

Go with the fat bottoms and the not so slinky Ernie Balls. For extremes go with the Zakk Wylde GHS Set. You can always just buy a heavier E string. Just strings sells singles. Back in the day, you couldn't get light gauge strings, so guitarists bought banjo strings. You may just need a nut repair. The grooves wear out with age and that causes problems. Could be a fret problem too. I'd check the truss rod too. Some people have problems with the tuneamatic bridges on LPs. I'd check out all of those things first before ditching your favorite strings.

If I wanted strings that are 10s and not nickel, I'd get some Fender Stainless Bullets. Granted, both my guitars are tremolo....

Elixir, Dean Markeley, GHS, Ernie Ball and other string makers have "custom" sets for sale. Dunno about D'Addario. I use Elixirs 10-52 and they're so much better than 10-46 in every way. They also sell 10-48 but I'll take the heavier lower strings. They ring like bells! :D Ernie Ball's got lots of those sets. Hell, GHS even sells the signature Zakk Wylde set... 10-70!

Take a look at your local stores.

+1 If you wanted to keep the 10's I think fat bottoms are 10 - 52 right.
When I get my jaguar I think I'm gonna go with 11 - 48's as this isn't that far from the 10 - 46's I'm used to but should improve stability and tone.

I really like Gibson strings. If they have the right feel, but not the tone you're looking for, try the Brite Wires or the Les Paul Signature strings.

check out DR strings, they're 11's feel like 10s but retain their tension just as well.. the string is compressed or something unusual - have a look!

i have them on all my guitars right now :D

EBs seem to be the "slinkiest" strings I have used. I went back to D'Addarios and they seem to have more tension. I would say try a set of D'Addario 10s.
