Recomendation for Jackson DXMG Guitar!

Hey all,

I have a Jackson DXMG with a JB in the bridge position. I am not entirely happy with the tone. I was thinking about trying out a Duncan Distortion. Does anyone have any experience with this guitar and my style of music? I am mostly into the 80's hair metal thing. I aim aiming for a bit more clarity and a more balanced tone than what I have now. Will the Distortion make that much of a difference than my JB with my Tiny Terror/Kustom Defender 50 amp?

Can anyone recommend a different or better option?

PS- It has a basswood body and licensed floyd locking trem.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bob

Thanks for the advice. Any others are welcome to chime in.....

I was considering the Tone Zone recommended by the TheLivingDead above, does anyone second that motion?

Re: Recomendation for Jackson DXMG Guitar!

Are you sure of the basswood - different years had different wood.

I don't mind the stock Hz's that came with mine.

You say you want more clarity. I'd say go the opposite direction of the DD and get a Custom as mentioned already or the Custom 5.

If you are sure it's basswood, I'd take a look at DiMarzio offerings. They seem to do good in Ibanez guitars. I have Super 3's in a pair of HM Strats and they sound good, but I'm not sure if I'd say they were clear. Maybe a Super Distortion.

Yes, it's definitely Basswood. Thanks for the advice.... Maybe "Articulate" is a more accurate word than clear.....I want distortion, just it sounds like a blanket is covering my speaker with the tone. Somewhat dull....A small improvement over the stock HZ's but not by much...

Anyway, I ordered a Tone Zone....I let you all know how it works out. I am still open to advice though cause if I don't like the Tone Zone, I'll be dumping it real quick...

I think you'll be more than happy. The TZ is a very cool little pup. Remember to play around with it's height when you get it installed. Dial in that sweet spot and you'll be grinning from ear to ear.

Re: Recomendation for Jackson DXMG Guitar!

I'd like to say HI to all members and SD maniacs. Im entering the world of duncans and investing in two-humb set in my Jackson DXMG which currently runs on stock EMG-HZ.

I've read tons of interesting stuff in this forum and really appreciate all the info I obtained; however, being still undecided, I'd like to make sure if I chose a set that would work flawless.

My musical interests are quite versatile: glam metal, jazz, thrash, funky, prog rock, blues.
Bridge pickup would be responsible for hair metal/oldskool thrash/prog rock riffing and excessive soloing. . I also dig classic hard rock sounds, but I know I can’t have everything. The bridge (obviously split) should provide great clean sounds, allow to play decent funky and bluesy stuff when single coiled. It would be great to get as close as possible to the funky sound of single coil strats.

Call me an idiot, but right now I am not sure about the wood used in my Jack Dinky… Knowing almost nothing about guitars, I bought it around 2005 ‘cause it was a Jackson and had a Floyd (later swapped the stock licensed tremolo for original Schaller). I didn’t put any attention to the wood. I’ve been aware of the fact that there were alder and basswood DXMG’s, seen many confusing info on the net (guitar shops, forums) I just didn’t care for wood as I was learning basics . All these years I thought that it's made of basswood (couple years ago a luthier who swapped the tremolo bridge said that), that’s why I spent days reading this forum in order to pick an ideal one for basswood. Not an easy task.
I chose Tb-5 Custom or PATB2 for bridge + Sh-10 Full Shred or Screaming Demon or PATB1n for neck. Shall I expect any mounting difficulties with the Parallel Axis models? I was more into Tb-5+Sh-10 because of the accessibility.

This is an Japanese DXMG (serial no. 9704211) The "finish/playability check" flyer with the workers signature dates 24/7/2001. As I recently discovered, forums and wiki says that pre-2006 DXMG’s are made of alder, so it was quite a bombshell for me! Is there anyone to confirm it? How to be 100% sure?
Now when the guitar (hopefully) turned to be alder body, I gotta start all over again. Shall I begin my Duncan story with a classic TB-4+SH-2 set or go further? I’m totally puzzled right now, but I assume that alder body gives more possibilities. What about the RTM DeMartini signature pup. Is it really worth its price?

Rest of the gear would be Peavey Classic 30 tube combo + Dunlop mxr gt-od (works fine, even on my EMG-HZ which are in fact pretty good sounding, but lacking “something”)

Thanks in advance for all suggestions!

Re: Recomendation for Jackson DXMG Guitar!

Try looking in the Jackson catalog for the year your guitar was made and it should list the wood type in the specs. I'm pretty sure they have the older catalogs available for download on their website.

Re: Recomendation for Jackson DXMG Guitar!

Mikkeysixx try JB/Jazz with a mxr or boss eq pedal.

I will say that the use of EQ is seriously underrated/overlooked by many guitar players. I have been an advocate of using EQ to obtain your perfect tone since day 1. It just makes sense to me.

Try swapping the bridge and neck pickups first. (I believe those have a quick connect on them.)

Re: Recomendation for Jackson DXMG Guitar!

Thanks a lot, I just ordered a used TB4-SH2n set for about 110 bucks, and I'm installing them tommorrow, bored with those EMGs.

What about the DeMartini pickup? I heard it sounds great in alder. Worth spending 170$ ?
