i told a good friend of mine i would help find a guitar for him. he mostly plays rhythm guitar in a fairly technical thrash band (very megadeth influenced), but he wants to learn to play some leads as well. he's not too picky but said he wants a V, Preferably rosewood/ebony 24 fret fingerboard, alder or mahogany with passive pickups and a floyd rose (specs dont have to match perfectly). i'm familiar with jacksons, but is there any other good V anybody can recommend that would be under $700 (doesn't matter if used or new)

Check out esp.

I'm guessing you mean LTD? Most ESP V's will hit over 700 even used.

Theres lot of good offerings though really he should just dig around and see what he likes the D razorback v's can be had for about that price. Some of the BC Rich Kerry King models hit that mark too. Though for myself I would buy one of the Phil Demmel King V's they can be had for around 700-800 used they do have actives but thats easy enough to cure everything else fits the criterion though.

Have to have a whammy? I have a couple Epi '58 V's (black and korina) that I love. Great tones. Coolest-looking V is the original.

No Trem? Dean makes some awesome Vs in the Korean made '79 Series line for around $500 new.

+1 if you can deal with the headstock.

Then there is LTD V-401 and Schecter V-1 Hellraiser (trem option)

All of them are really good IMO.

Hated that headstock for 25 years, :naughty: then I gave in and found out it had no effect on me being able to play the guitar. :cool2:

BTW my first Dean was a SWEET Czech made Korina V off Evilbay for less than $350 in 2003. I'm about to get another Dean in Korina.

Epiphone with Livewires, or a Gibson Faded series if you can find it.

I don't know why people are suggesting fixed bridge guitars. First post clearly states preferably with a Floyd Rose.

Used Jackson RR5(FR)s can be in the $700 price range if you shop used. Mint condition RR3s (with Seymour Duncans) can be found in the $500 or even less range.

I would advise him or you to check local pawn shops and buy and sell ads such a Craigslist. You can get great deal and always chip them down on price too!

Everybody loves the V's for heavy music!

Dean import Mustaine Vs are good

+1

Played my buddy's trans black VMNT. One of the most awesome guitars I've ever played. If I were a V fan, I would definitely get one.

Deans, unfortunately have horrendous resale value, so you can probably get a black, silver, Angel of Deth model for under $500.

And if you're a rhythm player, you don't need a Floyd Rose. Excess machinery, extra hassle.

But you still have to look at it.

It gives me nightmares!

Me too. Looks like it split from the string tension. Makes the headstock too big, and weird.

I used to think it effected the resonance in a negative way and that the strings touched the previous tuning peg as they passed. I was wrong on both counts. You gents would prefer the series III V headstock I bet. It is comparable to most three per side headstock in dimensions overall.

This headstock is 16 years old and shows no signs of splitting. :friday:

Gibson ones from the past 10-15 years go for that fairly frequently if they are not super clean.
