Recommend a good tube combo

Yes...I'm still a beginner, but I only have this crappy SS Marshall amp to practice with, and I'm not happy with the sound.. So if you know a reasonable priced little tube combo please check in.. Everything from 10 watts to 30 watts is welcome. But I will however mention that I'm a hard rock/heavy metal kind of guy, so it should be able to handle that, however, I do play more mellow, 'normal' styles also. And I don't play live, only bedroom practicing..so far at least. That is why I figure that 30 watts should be maximum with a tube amp, but it doesn't mean you can't post if you for example know a good, reasonable priced 50 watt tube combo.

I have been looking around a little, but I really do not know which amp is capable of what, therefore I hope somebody will chime in..But keep in mind the price as I said.

Lestrat was advertising that his brother inlaw is selling a Peavey XXX 2x12 combo for $500.00

Not sure if it's what you're looking for, but I've got a TECH21NYC Trademark 60 1x12 2-ch amp for sale, $300.00 It's not a tube amp, but does a tube emulation very well! Ask Simon F...he loves his.

Re: Recommend a good tube combo

It's very hard to find a good, high gain tube combo at a low price. Check ebay for a Peavey 5150, Peavey XXX, Peavey Ultra (probably your best shot), ENGL Thunder, ENGL Screamer, Marshall JCM 900, Traynor YCV50, or Laney LC50.

It's even harder to find one that doesn't sound strangled at house-friendly volume.

Re: Recommend a good tube combo

I have long been a fan of smaller tube amps. However, if you are a metal / hard rock fan, I think you should seriously look at solid state, or even digital amps. They will do the metal thing SO much better, and you can probably find a great one cheaper than the high priced tube stuff that's all the rage. While I can't recommend a specific solid sate or digital amp ( cuz I don't know them well ), I would say that once you have done your homework, you might be able to find one in decent shape used on eBay, or at a somewhat higher price from a reputable dealer at gbase gear mall. PS I'm currently in the process of trading for a Rivera Fandango 55W 2X12 combo. I'll give a full review later!

Re: Recommend a good tube combo

Thanks for your help so far.. And I want to thank Puckboy99 for offering me some gear, but I'm sure you didn't notice that I live in europe..It sounds like good offers.

And well, if you say a solid state or digital amp is better for metal, then feel free to suggest some amps you like.. I'm open to all suggestions..It doesn't necessarily have to be a tube amp - if it sounds good, then who cares what it is.

Wow, also just checked the site out, and heard some of the clips, it does indeed sound impressive. That would definately be good enough for me..But you live overseas unfortunaly.

Re: Recommend a good tube combo

Yeah, and that's basically a good thing..what sucks though, is that I can't get them here.

Re: Recommend a good tube combo

I can't think of any small metal tube combos but if you got a normal tube amp and a pedal or two? . . .

Re: Recommend a good tube combo

If you're interested, I don't mind shipping....not sure what kind of "deal" it would be after shipping & customs fees, but......

AlecLee hit it right...tubes + bedrooms + metal don't really add up well. It can be done, but you somehow feel strangled.

You would probably do better with solid state, where you can get a decent tone at different volumes.

The stand out feature IMO with TECH21 is the cleans. It does a very good Fender clean & it takes pedals well.

Good luck in your quest!!!

Re: Recommend a good tube combo

The Laney LC15 is a GREAT little tube amp. For metal, I doubt it'd cut it. Try it with an MXR microamp or a SD pickup booster boost pedals and it may do it.
I'm planning on getting one along with an analog or tube distortion pedal (Damage Control Demonizer, Electro Harmonix English Muff'N) if the boost doesn't work out, and then maybe swap out the speaker.

Re: Recommend a good tube combo

GAS is getting serious, even more so for novice players. I see people who haven't learned their pentatonic scale yet playing 1000 dollar axes.

First word of advice-control that GAS and work those chops.

Second word of advice-Pro Junior w/ a pedal, if you really really need an amp get a tech21. Heck, even Carmine uses them!
