Re: Recommend HH pups for Strat... I'm trying to get close to Gibson Classic '57s ton
Well... here I am three and a half years later!
I wound up putting a pair of Gibson Classic 57 and Classic + 57 in one of my Teles, but to add a little more sparkle, I switched out the A2 magnets for A5 rough cast magnets. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the tones with this set-up! Sort of Gibsonish with a Fender sparkle.
The neck pickup is rich, full, deep AND sparkly bright. Very clear and clean. I love 'em! 500k Vol pot and a custom-made 500k No-Load tone pot. This guitar is a permanent member of my collection now.
The setup is guitar into Yamaha THR10 which creates the amp tonality and provides numerous EFX, then headphone output jack to a pair of M-Audio BX8 powered studio monitors. The resulting sound with this setup is AMAZING. Full, deep, rich tonality at every volume level from a whisper quiet to roaring. This sounds way better in my home studio than any stand alone amp sounds. My Fender Champ, Vox AC10, and Fender Rumble 50 are getting no use any more. I don't play in a band, I just write, practice, and record here in my studio, so this amplification system is an ideal solution for me. The Studio Monitors take whatever amp tone the Yamaha produces and reproduces it in high fidelity, so bass response is incredible even a whisper low volumes. I'm blown away by the sound quality.
As an aside, I also put a Dimarzio PAF Master in the neck position of another Tele of mine and the tone was way too bright, to the point of being harsh and just bad sounding. Not a good pickup choice for a Tele! The PAF Master is a very bright pickup, so when put into a Tele which is a very bright guitar - too much bright!
So I took one of the A2 magnets (that I had removed from a Gibson Classic '57) and put it in the Dimarzio PAF Master - in place of the A5 magnet which was in the Dimarzio. The result is the harsh high frequencies have been tamed and the PAF Master sounds good in the Tele now! What a difference going from A2 to A5 or A5 to A2 can make in tone quality!
PAF Master (modded with A2 magnet) at the neck, Cavalier Fat Lion in the bridge.
