Recommend me a good medium output humbucker!

I need a good low to medium output pickup for a mahogany set-neck guitar. I need:

- Good clarity and cut without being harsh
- Fairly tight lows
- Not a lot of compression
- Needs to be able to handle a decent amount of gain when I need it to. (Like, say, an early Metallica amount of gain at the very most)

I was thinking Screamin' Demon, but does anyone have other suggestions? Custom/59 Hybrid maybe?

Duncan Distortion. Use the volume knob for all of the above.

^ eh, a medium output is a distortion....wow, I wonder what high output is in your book.

For mine I'd say a Custom/59 hybrid. Clarity from the 59 coil plus a bit of compression from the C coil. Plus some magic from the mismatch.

I'd go with a vote for the Demon, though I can't comment on how it works with the type of scooped sound Metallica use for their rhythm stuff. I could see it working well with a wah pedal if you like what Kirk does though.

For reference, mine is in an alder bodied Strat with a rosewood fingerboard.

Demon sounds about right. Maybe paired with PG.

Yeah Screamin Demon should be right up your alley.

It can handle gobs of gain like a champ, provided your amp is capable of pulling off that kinda sound while still sounding good. Friend of mine has one in his Schecter Scorpion and he plays in a black/death metal band using a Mesa Recto preamp through a Mesa 50/50 power amp into a Mesa 4x12 cab.

Sounds fantastic.

Re: Recommend me a good medium output humbucker!

Like what everyone else said Screamin Demon or try a Custom with the a5 mag.

Re: Recommend me a good medium output humbucker!

my hats in for the 59/c i used it ad it can get amazingly percussive if you like that kind of thing.

Re: Recommend me a good medium output humbucker!

A2P? Or is that too spongey?

From what I've heard you can try the Whole Lotta Humbucker.

Re: Recommend me a good medium output humbucker!

I have mixed feelings about the Demon. I like the lead tone, and the clean tone, but for power chords I found it’s clarity to be a disadvantage. I felt like it required upping the distortion level to get anything near the traditional meaty power chord I could easily get with less distortion level from a Custom SH-5 or a 59. Even then there was percussiveness to the Demon that didn’t sit right with me.

I would go Custom SH-5 for classic rock to metal OR if you rarely metal a 59.

Re: Recommend me a good medium output humbucker!

Plenty of good suggestions already. My recommendation is the Brobucker. This is a special order item but, of course, through a cranked valve amplifier, the Brobucker is one special pickup.

Re: Recommend me a good medium output humbucker!

You have just described the Custom or SH-5. Do it, you won't regret it.

Re: Recommend me a good medium output humbucker!

I love the Custom to death, but I wouldn't classify it as medium output. It's pretty strong. I can't comment on the Demon, because I've never owned one, but while the Custom is the favorite Duncan pickup I've used, I don't think it fits the description.

Re: Recommend me a good medium output humbucker!

Thanks for the responses. So, like I thought, it'll probably be either the 59/C or the Demon for me. No custom shop, since I don't have that kind of dough right now. So, what specifically does the 59/C do that the Demon doesn't, and vice-versa?

Re: Recommend me a good medium output humbucker!

The 59/C is a lil hotter then the demon I think. I never had a 59/C but own a Lil Demon which I know the smaller ones have a different sound they still give you an idea of what a regular size one sounds like. But for what you want the Demon is perfect in every aspect.

Re: Recommend me a good medium output humbucker!

Tell me more about the 59/C. I'm curious. Someone mentioned "magic from the mismatched coils", what exactly does that mean?

Re: Recommend me a good medium output humbucker!

If you want clarity and cut, and the heavy is coming from your amp, it's hard to beat the Paf PRO.
