Recommend me a jazz box, please.

Re: Recommend me a jazz box, please.

The cherry wood is not bad. Played a buddy's Seagull acoustic with the cherry sides and spruce top and it compared favorably to my Alvarez's spruce/rosewood construction. Both OM/folk sized guitars.

Re: Recommend me a jazz box, please.

The Epiphone Broadway gets my vote. Plus a Seth Lover set. It doesn't get much better than that..

Re: Recommend me a jazz box, please.

I highly recommend the Epiphone Joe Pass. I had one, and it was an amazing jazz box. Kinda want it back. Also, the Godin 5th Avenue Kingpin is not terribly expensive and is also a great sounding box.

Re: Recommend me a jazz box, please.

Thanks for these replies!

I was checking out the Godins but I'm not a fan of P90's. *GASP* Is it possible to put a "regular" set in one?

I think I'm liking the Hagstrom. Hmmm. And nothing against Epiphone, but they're all I've pretty much played and I'd like something different. I am kind of a small pear of a guy and am concerned about the difficulty of a big, deep box. I figure I'll actually be standing a lot. I really should try a bunch but I don't feel like going into a Guitar Center or driving to Cleveland (yet). Unfortunately, hollowbodies aren't popular with the few local shops around here.

Godin LGXSA & Other Godins

Godin LGXSA & Other Godins

My Godin LGXSA is a Jazzy piece of work , they can do just about anything but take the trash out heh heh .

Several concoctions of wood types too in the line of LGXs that will make a tonal difference . The LGXSA series with the solid mahogany is what I have the LGXT uses a silver leaf body and they do have a different sound no matter what amp you play them through .

If its a Jazz sound your after there are quite a few schools on this issue that go deep and fanatical so watch your step cause your bound to make a few eye brows go nuts one way or the other .

Any one here care to talk about Telecasters and their side of Jazz ? There plenty who do , just check this Telecaster Users Group Forum :

http://www.tdpri.com/forum/telecaster-discussion-forum/134172-jazz-tele.html"]

My Godin LGXSA and other Godins as well as many PRS and the like have piezo pickups on each string . This allows me to get a really cool Telecaster tone I love it , when I blend the mag and the piezos I get a Tele sound that's to good to be true .

I have several types of tube amps ( some vintage ) and one SS that cuts it for Jazz , my Polytone mini Brute .

My neighbor has an Artcore AF75 and I like it a lot , it's prone to feed back issues at high volume though .

Plays well as far as a fast actioned guitar and it's got killer looks to , it's price is the best of them all , really a deal .

Good luck

Cherry's Nice

Cherry's Nice

Yeah the only thing that makes me apprehensive about those Godin's is the canadian cherry--it's not a typical tonewood so i don't know what to expect

Also timmy, where the hell did you find a reasonably priced eastman? All the one's I've seen are at least $1200

Also Also JB, pick out any epiphone you want and I'll trade you for that 175

========================

Cherry is Cherry :) heh heh , sounds a lot like rose wood , rings , some say it is almost the same as a rosewood . Not super bright like maple at all , well balanced over all from low bass tone through the mids and onto the highs .

I find cherry very true in reproducing a even toned spectrum .

I have pondered making a all cherry electric .

Have a buddy with a rose neck on a Les Paul -- WOW

Easy .

I have a video clip to put up sometime soon where I'm playing my godin in a live setting and it sounds absolutely warm and natural. Its not a conventional tonewood at all, but it's still lovely sounding.

As for the Eastman's, I guess I have an odd angle on this because Canadian guitars retail for much much higher than American guitars, so any jazz guitar under 1500 is pretty much a steal in my mind.

Re: Recommend me a jazz box, please.

if you are gonna stand a lot then get a slimline like a 335 or a casino....but casinos have p90s (which you dont dig) and 335s are pretty bright for a true jazz sound.
Okay im gonna put this out there cos i reckon this would be absolutely spot on perfect for you (if you can wait to save up......) even tho you have a budget etc and i have been talking up the joe pas......
Gibson 137 classic.
Lovely sounding axes. Thinline. nice humbuckers. and a half block so its a cross between a 335 and a 175. Just amazing. So....if you are a patient man....forget all the half assed axes like the cort etc......make the road trip to a gibson dealer...play a 137....dream about it.....save up....and get one really great axe that you can be happy with forever....

Re: Recommend me a jazz box, please.

A 137 would be absolutely fantastic but it's going to take me a looong time to pay for one. I think a Cort or Hagstrom would tide me over for the near future. Besides, I don't think I'm good enough for a Gibson but that's a different discussion.

Hey Drew:

Looks are great , action must be impeccable cause those sound clips say it all technically ...

Is it me or did those clips sound kind of [ plinky ] ?

The sound to me is from a [ sound ] stand point , I didn't get that fat tone I'm used to and like on my monitors ( they are really decent ones too ) that I get on other recordings .

I did like what I heard though aside from the above critique .

Easy man and thanks for those pics and the link .

Well depends on what guitar's sound clips you're referring to. The resonator fretboard sounds a lot like ebony so there's a bit more top and definition to it than rosewood, but in my opinion none of the HJ's sound "plinky", especially the 800, that one sounds super fat.

I think that link may have been to the HL-550, the single floating neck pickup one? If that's the case that's basically what that guitar is for, a super defined almost acoustic soloist kinda tone. It does the joe pass thing awesome, way better than the joe pass epi does the joe pass thing, but for combo style stuff I agree there's better options, like the HJ's haha.

Re: Recommend me a jazz box, please.

of course you do have a les paul already......they are pretty good for jazz too....

It's an Epiphone though......:boggled:

Those Hagstroms look like you're supposed to eat them.
