Recommend me a modern sounding wah please

My birthday is coming up (next tuesday) and I asked my sister for a wah, although she didn't even know what that was when I first asked :laugh2:

Anyway, I want a modern sounding wah, good for really heavy stuff, but also funky "whacka" stuff if you know what I mean. I need a very lifely, but transparant wah sound, I don't like wahs that color my tone too much. Must also be easy to use, I'm the kinda guy that forgets to unplug the wah when he's done :smack: . And must be solid, I almost broke my old italian wah, and luckilly I sold it before I did :blackeye:

I was thinking Morley Bad Horsie (perhaps II, although they're very expensive) or an Ibanez Weeping Demon (WD-7), but anything else would be fine if it meets my needs.

Could any of you wah gurus help me out, please? :)

It's pretty hard to go wrong with the Vox 847,both in price and perfomance..

John you ever try the BOSS FW-3 Foot Wah (not a real imaginative name mind you) ... simple, has a peak control, and a remote jack for switching it on or off (so you can leave it set and instantly switch it on or off as a boost/filter)...It's kinda non-descipt sounding, but in a cool way so it never gets in the way ... I might go so far as to say bland, but in a good way ...very quiet and clean unit, very smooth also ... this isn't the old PW-1 Rocker Wah, tht was an older one that had a three position range switch and a width control (a dumb idea mind you, it let you use the entire range of the physical treadle movement but only over certain range ...cool idea, but useful 1 out of 10 times perhaps ... that why I say it was dumb). Some of the voxs are just to ducky sounding when used with distortion, and they don't do that half way set filter sound well. Anyway, just curious .... I actually do like the FW-3 a lot.

Kent,I'm a player for 30 years and I'm still an ole fashioned Crybaby/Vox kinda guy...Haven't tryed too many of the new wahs? I Like the Vox 847 and then I work my magic within it....

i love it because when you're not physically stepping on it, it's not on. and it's range is insane!!

Re: Recommend me a modern sounding wah please

Hmm... I'm looking for a similar thing. I want a wah that can do both Adam Jones and Danny Lohner type stuff, and Hendrix type stuff. Has anyone tried John's modded 847s for the former style?

Mixed opinions, huh?

The Vox does seem great, but it doesn't really cover all the turf, thanks though John.
The tech21 Killer Wail sounds very promising though, I'm going to check out the pricing on that baby later on today, thanks Pete!

I'll just wait for more suggestions, but gotta make the decision fast :smack:

MORLEY!!! I love morley. They have plenty of options too. Worth looking into.

Re: Recommend me a modern sounding wah please

Dunlops CFH wah is versatile as hell...wins in my book, but I never use wah.

Re: Recommend me a modern sounding wah please

Morley BAd Horsie, but not the Bad Horsie II, all it does is add some noise to the original.

It's built like a tank, and has no pots to wear out, PLUS Morley has the best warranty and customer service of any brand of gear I have ever used, Period!

I guess what wah a guy gets is based on styles..Yesterday I read a Guitar Player "shoot out" on wahs and they picked the Dunlop Crybaby 535Q as the one to get for versatility and for use with high gain...After that,it was the Vox 847..The Bad Horsie and the Tech 21 didn't get favorable write ups,but maybe the guys testing the wahs were biased towards vintage wah tones?

If you get a wah that's too dark or too ballsy,it's a one trick pony for single coil pickups...Plug a humbucking guitar into this same wah and you'll get un-defined mudd...I favor the vintage wah tones for these reasons..

Re: Recommend me a modern sounding wah please

Neeradj,
I have the Bad Horsie and the Vox 847, and have owned the Dunlop Crybaby. The Dunlop died on me after a few years, and I decided to upgrade with the Vox. I found the Bad Horsie at a pawn shop for $30 and couldn't pass it up. They're all a little different. Out of those three, I recommend the Bad Horsie for what you're wanting. It uses an adapter, takes a whacking keeps on wahing, and is the most fitting for your tone requirements. The Dunlop was a great all around wah, so if cost is a factor, go that route.

Re: Recommend me a modern sounding wah please

what's the best wah pedal for a setup with humbuckers and high gain...(DSL amp)?

Re: Recommend me a modern sounding wah please

The ultimate modern wah would a RMC Wizard Wah, modern-voiced for high-gain application. The Budda Wah is also a great alternative for modern tones.

Re: Recommend me a modern sounding wah please

I owned a Dunlop CFH and I didn't enjoy it like I thought I would. Didn't really cut as well as I'd like with distortion.

I'd go with Morley. My friend had a Bad Horsie wah and it was a good pedal. I liked how you didn't have to toe touch it to turn it on.

Re: Recommend me a modern sounding wah please

I had a Morley Bad Horsie also, very good for what you were wanting, but I sold it as I prefer vintage wahs...

Re: Recommend me a modern sounding wah please

Thanks for all the input you guys, you're the best and that's why I asked you!

I was considering the RMC but it was so pricey I didn't think I could get it from my sister.

Cazmarzak, hmm yeah I was considering the Bad Horsie 2 because of the extra fine tuning, but at first I wasn't sure I needed it. If it really doesn't add anything but noise I'm going to take the Bad Horsie (1)

Zeppelinfan, yeah I know you were selling yours but by the time I found out it was already gone :blackeye: , thanks for the input though

And thanks to all of you, if it all works out it'll be screamin' through a Framus Cobra head anytime soon, sure hope it will
