+1 for parametric EQ.
If you can find a beat up old Rocktron ProQ for $150, you won't be disappointed. It's extremely powerful, and totally transparent when the values are at zero. It's basically a lo/hi shelving with parametric mids. If you're running mono, then you can daisy chain the two channels together and of course you'd leave the treble and bass alone on one of them, but you'd have a stacked parametric midrange band. Plus there's hush in there if you want it. A real light hush setting doesn't interfere with anything tonally. There's also a weird Phase feature, that is sort of a variable crossover BBE circuit. I don't use it often, but it's not a bad thing. It doesn't impart anything negative to the sound, just a different phase relationship between the lows and highs, allowing you to manipulate how they'll penetrate the speaker cone. It's programmable and bypassable.
