Recommend me an amp that fits....

Re: Recommend me an amp that fits....

Yeah,. if the 5150´S cleans were better it might be an option, but stock definitely not....

As far as the ADA MP-1 goes: Have they improved in the last 10 years as far as flexibility and tonal range? I couldn´t ever really get a decent "non 80s metal" tone out of the one I had in my old rack, I much preferred the ART SGX 2000 back then......

Oh boy, I can already see myself walking out of some Music shop with thousand of dollars of amp equipment that I´ll never have time to learn to use properly....:laugh2:

As I already said Zerb I think a XXX or JSX would fit your sound better than the 5150...

Though I didn't played one I throw a ENGL SE in ;)

I had the same problem getting a "non 80's tone" at first, but found out the answer is the balance between the two drive levels. I run the first one around 3, and the second dimed.

Also, a pedal in front does wonders. I bought a DS-1 a few days before the MP-1 arrived, and was really happy with each of them separately. Then, when I tried them together.... :saeek:

Oh yeah, I run the mids on the MP-1 lower than normal, and get them back with the DS-1. I also keep the treble and presence fairly low. It's a different sound than I've gone for in the past, but it cuts through my drummer, and still sounds full when I'm playing alone.

Pedal in front = no go... if you´ve seen me on a stage you´ll know why, the chances of me and the pedal being anywhere near each other when needed are about the same as the chances of Mustaine switching back to Jackson :laugh2:

How much clean do you do? I run the DS-1 with the level all the way up, and tone & distortion all the way down, and can get cleans by rolling back the volume knob. The DS-1 sits up on the amp, too, as it never needs turned off.

So where's the difference to the amp's channel switcher then?

That that can be accomplished with a MIDI looper if necessary and that an Amp with MIDI switching will already have that feature ;)

Why the hell should I switch sounds manually if we already have the entire rest of the rig MIDI switched and triggered.. it´s just one more mistake that can be made = one more thing to let the computer take care of... especially considering that I already have to swithc Pickups at that exact moment... ;)

My clean tone is the diametric opposite of my Distorted tone: ice cold, distant, eerie and totally devoid of any distortion.... like a huge cave with a distant drum beat that ´s almost pitch black as far as lighting goes, or even the same beat in space.... You´ll hear it if we ever sell enough EPs to release the album, lol :laugh2:

I can roll beck the volume knob far enough to get a nice bluesy tone out of the lead channel with most axes, but for clean I just need at the minimum a different voicing and separate gain knobs... You also have to remember the massive Output I often have into the lead channel from the combination of High output pickups AND onboard preamps, there is usually no clean with the bridge pickup, period :laugh2:

This is gettin' too space agey for me... but whatever floats your boat.

Hm that would scare me if a computer switches my amp channels while I'm playing :laugh2:

I think you'd really like the MP-1's clean. It's got tube & solid state clean circuits, and a killer chorus (I hated chorus prior to now).

Re: Recommend me an amp that fits....

Is ADA even still in business?? I can´t find a current homepage, and everything points to them being gone.... it might be a good Idea, and if I can find one I´ll try it, but I´m not exactly too keen on buying 20 year old electronics that nobody supports anymore....

How are the new Rocktrons like the Prophesy? I know that the HUSH line went down the toilet after the GHS takeover, but what´s the story on the pres?

Re: Recommend me an amp that fits....

I have played a ton of stuff down to the new Rivera Knucklehead Tre recently.

I find for metal Mesa is probably the best current sound. I say this with ZERO bias, but the Framus Cobra is a great idea - it has gain for days, very tight, voiced bright to cut thru, good quality, and voiced off the Triple Rec but a littlre more toneful with less of the Mesa "Flub". (yeah, I use a Framus, but I use the much browner sounding model).

I AM a huge fan of the ENGL powerball, nothing is more crushing! I think they are fatter sounding as well, with a little Marshall thickness in there.

I prefer to be able to back off the gain.

I am not a huge fan of Peaveys save the fact they are good for the road, esp. if you forsee damage and theft. 5150s are a little oevrdone to me, but I do like that you can mod the hell out of them and make your own tone.

I must say I have had great experiences playing thru the Bogner Uberschall, but I feel they have that one sort of tone that you can't milk for much else (see New Billy Idol, Avenged Sevenfold), but gobs of gain and very tight.

I can also tell you the Bogner Fish preamp sounds amazing, but might not have that tight Recto gain you seek.

Since you use the VTWIN, won't you consider the TriAxis? They are beautiful machines!

Mine's pretty old, but still kicking. You could probably score one and several backups for next to nothing if you look around a bit.

Well, the V-twin sounds more like a pissed mark series than a recto (which is good because I don´t particularly like the Recto series, mk I or II). And the entire reason for this thread is a boycot of Ruby Tubes/ Magic Parts and their affiliates, which it has been confirmed includes Mesa... So I´m now essentially looking for the tone of a V-twin rack preamp and 50:50 stereo, but from another manufacturer. Is Mesa were an option, the Triaxis 2.0 / stereo 2:90 combo would be a no brainer....

When Mesa stops using Ruby´s tube matching system, I´ll gladly switch back... But until then, I need an Amp ;)

Re: Recommend me an amp that fits....

If you go the Peavey route the JSX may fit the bill. To my ears it sounds like a beefier, more versitile Triple XXX. Ice cold steralized cleans too!
